Nothing Is Impossible: 7 Steps to Realize Your True Power and Maximize Your Results, by Tom Oliver

Tom Oliver has shared his extraordinary secrets with Bono, Richard Branson, the Dalai Lama, and Deepak Chopra. Now he shares them with you.

Are you ready to lose your self-doubt and use the tools you already have to turn your wildest dreams into tangible reality? This book is about to put them all at your fingertips. In this extraordinary new road map for success, Tom Oliver--a motivational self-made entrepreneur and coach to many of the world’s most notable CEOs, philanthropists, and entertainers--shows you how to dramatically alter your life path. Nothing Is Impossible is a proven seven-step whole-brain plan anyone can use to improve his or her business, life, and career from the man Deepak Chopra calls "an extraordinary leader."

Have you ever struggled with success?

Have you ever felt that your strengths were left untapped--your true talents unrecognized?

Do you have a different plan for yourself from the one others might imagine for you?

As Oliver explains, what really distinguishes people who get things done and realize their dreams from those who don't is that they don't allow their self-doubts to stop them--they don't cultivate what the Buddha called the "habit of doubt." This book dispels that doubt, freeing you to set and meet the personal and professional goals most people only dream about.

Clearly, step by step, with personal anecdotes from some of the world’s most influential leaders and his own remarkable life, Oliver presents a practical playbook for anyone who wants to change his or her life and future. It also features comprehensive exercises and abundant resources. In just a few minutes a day, you'll learn how to:

  • Define your personal destination
  • Break free from limiting beliefs
  • Build a first-class worldwide network from scratch
  • Create extraordinary success doing what you love
  • Embody self-confidence and charisma wherever you go
  • Turn failure into victory

Whether you're a business professional, athlete, entrepreneur, artist, or anyone else, after reading and implementing the wisdom of Nothing Is Impossible you'll be able to transcend the boundaries of what today's world thinks is possible.

"In this book, Tom Oliver shows how anyone from any background anywhere can become the best he or she can be, realize his or her true potential, and get to a place where truly nothing is impossible." -- CHADE-MENG TAN, head, Google Talent Team and author of the New York Times bestseller Search Inside Yourself

"I have been lucky enough to meet and work with many of the world's business leaders, and it's clear that the themes explored within this book are, or should be, at the top of the agenda for any leading company. Tom's ability to shift the way you think makes him an excellent source of inspiration to anyone seeking to stay one step ahead." -- from the Foreword by JEZ FRAMPTON, Global Group CEO, Interbrand

Delivers on a Bold Promise
By John Chancellor
It is easy to be skeptical of a book with such a bold title. But Tom Oliver, author of Nothing Is Impossible, delivers on the bold promise. He does not promise that everything will be quick and/or easy. It does promise that if you follow the concepts outlined in this book, you will be able to achieve dreams you thought were impossible.

As you will learn from this book, Mr. Oliver is quite an astonishing, accomplished fellow. He is a musician, singer, keynote speaker, artist, entrepreneur, surfer, philanthropist, leader, and lecturer in an MBA program at Manchester Business School. In addition he founded the World Peace Foundation and The World Peace Festival. What makes this so impressive is he did not grow up in a wealthy household or with significant connections. In his own words, "I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth, with a big name or a trust fund." In fact, growing up he had a serious stuttering problem and his "kindergarten teacher and psychologists told him he would be unfit for school." The point of this is not to brag on his accomplishments but to let the reader know that "Nothing is Impossible" - that if Mr. Oliver accomplished so much, the reader can also.

In the book, Mr. Oliver gives seven broad steps to "realizing your true power and maximizing your results." The seven steps are: Define Your Destination; Embrace Yourself; Learn from the Masters; Harness Your Creative Power; Embrace Change; Overcome Your Challenges and Cooperate for Success.

The biggest takeaway for me was the two most important ingredients for success are: Follow your passion and have the courage to take the first small step. If you truly believe in your ambitions/goals and have the courage to pursue them, you can accomplish magic. Another significant lessons is the need for alignment in our business and personal relationship partners. If your visions are not aligned, you will always have problems. Far too many people neglect this bit of advice and create untold suffering in their business and personal lives.

Mr. Oliver writes in a very conversational style. The book is easy to read. Mr. Oliver shares plenty of real life stories that support the concepts and lessons he is teaching. In each chapter there are numerous exercises designed to help the reader implement the concepts. The exercises are generally very short and fairly easy to implement. As Mr. Oliver repeatedly states in the book, the concepts are worthless without action. He constantly advises that the action need not be major. Take the smallest step possible. Just be sure that you do it.

For the most part the lessons are very straightforward. Some do go against conventional wisdom. But it is difficult to argue with his success.

Throughout the book, you will find many references to other valuable resources, You Tube talks, quotes, books and real life examples that will educate and inspire the reader.

There is an amazing amount of material covered in this book. I believe the greatest value can be achieved by reading through the book and then going back and taking things one-step at a time, doing the exercises and implementing the ideas. This is an excellent road map for achieving your dreams. It is a bold promise but if you take things one-step at a time, are passionate about what you are trying to accomplish, bring lots of energy to the process, "Nothing Is Impossible".

I was provided a review copy of this book.

Simple Exercises to Challenge the Status Quo
By Dee Long
We have to admit our skepticism was on full alert as we started reading this book, thinking, oh, yeah, another you can do anything pep talk. But as we progressed through Nothing is Impossible and began doing the simple yet challenging mental exercises outlined by Oliver, we definitely felt our interest, enthusiasm and optimism rising. Oliver befriends the reader by sharing just enough of his own personal struggles and history to offer that encouraging helping hand that is so often missing in today's super competitive business environment. His "Cooperate for Sucess" chapter is among the most important in this book. Because you only need a few minutes to complete each exercise, it's easy to come back to the book on a daily basis to select a page at random and complete that exercise. Although it's impossible to change now what didn't help or nourish us in the past, Tom Oliver makes it possible to understand how our mental state and actions can influence a wide range of possibilites to make a more satisfying future. We still don't agree that "Nothing" is impossible, but Oliver's book sure makes a strong case that you can achieve 99 percent of what your heart really and truly desires.

Realize Your Potential
By Alain B. Burrese
I enjoyed reading "Nothing Is Impossible: 7 Steps to Realize Your True Power and Maximize Your Results" by Tom Oliver because I enjoy reading positive uplifting books on success and achievement. And that is just what this book is, an positive book designed to help the reader succeed and find fulfillment in life.

The author's seven steps include: Define Your Destination, Embrace Yourself, Learn from the Masters, Harness Your Creative Power, Embrace Change, Overcome Your Challenges, and Cooperate for Success. These concepts are not different from those found in many books of this genre, because face it, there aren't any new principles of success, only different ways to present them. And that is what Oliver does, he presents them in his personal unique way. There are many personal examples from the author on his own life and those of successful and famous people he's had opportunities to meet and do business with. Mixed with this are many quotes to help motivate and inspire. (Those that criticize self-help books for all being the same, etc. are often looking for the magic bullet rather than recognizing that all of these books contain the magic bullet for at least someone, and that if you just take one thing and implement it into your life to make your life better, you've gained from reading it.)

Like many books, there are parts of this book that will resonate more strongly with some readers, and different chapters that will better connect with others. But I do feel there is at least a portion of this book that will help just about anyone think bigger and dream to accomplish more. This is especially true for those who enjoy reading business and self-help books to motivate and inspire to greater things. There are gray boxes the recap the important points to remember and many exercises that if done, will undoubtedly help the person doing them find their own path to success. (I'll admit, I did some of the exercises and enjoy where they took me, but others I have left to go back to.)

"Nothing Is Impossible" will help you realize your potential to do more and to do good for the world. Oliver sets an example of an entrepreneurial approach to business and life that is passionate and worthy of following. If you enjoy self-help books, give this one a read, you won't be disappointed.

This lavishly illustrated book is the first to examine the development of Gothic sculpture throughout Europe. It discusses not only the most famous monuments - such as the cathedrals of Chartres, Amiens, and Reims, Westminster Abbey, and the Siena Duomo - but also less familiar buildings in France, England, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Scandinavia. A synthesis of new research, interpretations, methodologies, and insights that have evolved over the last twenty years, the text is accompanied by hundreds of illustrations, including many photographs taken specially for the book. Together the text and the images provide a strikingly beautiful and authoritative survey for students and the general reader.

A Student Review of the American Political Dictionary
By Jonathan Gibson
As a student of American politics, I have found that this book is the most helpfull resource for finding, identifying, analyzing, and comparing every American political concept. From Article I of the Constitution to the 27th amendmant to The Americans with Disablitities Act of 1990 to Marbury v. Madison. This book is complete in every way. The format and layout of this book makes it easy to connect to other related concepts of American political culture by giving the student a coincise knowledge of our government. This book also greatly prepares the high school student for the United States Government and Politics AP exam. If you are looking for a great suplimental teaching and learning tool then look no further because this is it.

Great book on Poli Sci 101
By HAPPY GUY
I bought The American Political Dictionary by Plano and Greenburg for an Hispanic friend who didn't know the difference between the House of Representative and the Senate. I was surprised that the book had a least doubled in length since I taught in 1973, and the text was arranged by topic with a glossary to find terms instead of having all the entries arranged in alphabetical order. My amigo, however, said it was extremely easy to look up terms and find the desired information for his college course work. He was very pleased with the gift and said it really helped him a lot. Mucho gracias seniors Plano and Greenburg.

Kids at Work: Lewis Hine and the Crusade Against Child Labor, by Russell Freedman

Photobiography of early twentieth-century photographer and schoolteacher Lewis Hine, using his own work as illustrations. Hines's photographs of children at work were so devastating that they convinced the American people that Congress must pass child labor laws.

From Publishers Weekly
Hine photographed underprivileged child laborers from 1908-1918; their depleted faces look out from almost every page. "Freedman does an outstanding job of integrating historical photographs with meticulously researched and highly readable prose," said PW in a starred review. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-Using the photographer's work throughout, Freedman provides a documentary account of child labor in America during the early 1900s and the role Lewis Hine played in the crusade against it. He offers a look at the man behind the camera, his involvement with the National Child Labor Committee, and the dangers he faced trying to document unjust labor conditions. Solemn-faced children, some as young as three years old, are shown tending looms in cotton mills or coated with coal dust in the arresting photos that accompany the explanations of the economics and industries of the time. Both Freedman's words and quotes from Hine add impact to the photos, explaining to contemporary children the risky or fatiguing tasks depicted. Details such as Hine's way of determining children's height by measuring them against his own coat buttons add further depth and a personal touch to the already eloquent statements made by his thoughtfully composed black-and-white portraits. Also included are some of the photographer's other projects throughout his career. Readers will not only come to appreciate the impact of his groundbreaking work, but will also learn how one man dedicated and developed his skill and talents to bring about social reform.

From Booklist
Gr. 5-9. The selection of photographs in Freedman's works (he generally picks the photos himself) is usually as impressive as the text. That's certainly true of this book, which uses pictures to chronicle the state of child labor in early-twentieth-century America while profiling the life of reformer-photographer Lewis Hine. In his characteristically direct, unpretentious fashion, Freedman explains what Hine discovered as an investigative photographer for the National Child Labor Committee (a "militant" group that crusaded for such things as compulsory education), illustrating the revelations with haunting black-and-white pictures--many secured without the permission of factory owners--that bear witness to deplorable working conditions. Anecdotes and Hine's own words will pique interest in both the situations encountered and in Hine himself. The history and biography are not as smoothly entwined or as well detailed here as they have been in some of Freedman's other books (there's not quite enough about the socioeconomic underpinnings to satisfy report writers, and Hine's later life gets short shrift), but there's still a great deal to arouse and to inform, and the visual impact is unforgettable. Freedman's bibliography can guide readers toward more information, while materials like Meltzer's recent Cheap Raw Material can flesh out the necessary background. A book that makes history relevant to young people by putting them in the center of it. Stephanie Zvirin

Hate school? Your life could be so much worse...
By Amelia
Freedman has collected dozens of black and white photographs taken by Lewis Hine during the first decades of the twentieth century. Hine worked as an investigational photographer for the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). The NCLC wanted the United States government to pass laws concerning child labor, and thought that photos of the work children did would be more effective persuaders than mere speeches and statistics. Hine traveled the nation with his camera taking photographs, sometimes despite risk to his person.
The text of the book serves partly as a brief biography of Lewis Hine, and partly as explanatory backdrop for the scenes in the photographs. Freeman gives enough background information to put the images in their context, but not so much data as to overwhelm the reader. The machines, tools and environments are so strange to the modern eye that without clarification, many pictures would be meaningless.
The most shocking photographs in the collection are of the young boys involved in the coalmines. The filth on their faces, hands and clothing is astonishing. By comparison, the dangers and deplorable conditions of working in a cotton mill are not as readily apparent as those of working in a coal mine. However, reading Freeman's text exposes the dangers of moving machinery and smothering lint and humidity not so clear in the photos.
The book concludes by sharing the changes in child labor laws that Hine's photographs helped bring about, as well as information on the child labor situation of today.
This book is full of eye opening and shocking information for the unaware. School may be hard, but without child labor laws things could be so much worse.

Kids at Work ~ a real eye-opener
By Mom Of Many Munchkins
I found and bought this book at the Goodwill and thought it would be nice for looking at the photographs, since we like to look at real historical photos in our homeschool. Well, I decided to start reading the book and couldn't put it down. It didn't take long to finish it and I really enjoyed it. It was a real eye-opener. How interesting that Hines had to sneak around and often hide in order to get his photographs. He might tell a shop owner that he needed a photograph of a machine, but then asked the child worker to stand next to it so people could see the large size of the machine. Of course, he was really showcasing the child who had to run the machine. He knew exactly how many inches from the ground each button on his vest was, so a child could stand next to him and he could quickly tell how tall they were. When most of the photos in the book were taken, there were over 2 million American children younger than 16 who worked 12 or more hours a day, 6 days a week, for pitiful wages under unhealthy and hazardous conditions.

My youngest child is 5 and many of the photos were of children the same age, and younger, working in places like cotton fields or in spinner factories, many with bare feet. What a tragic life these children had, most not living very long. How would you like to work in a glass factory with the temperature in the building 100 - 130 degrees? The molten glass they worked with was 3,133 degrees! These glassblower assistants made about 65 cents a day; a pretty good wage back then. But, because it was so hazardous and unhealthy in the glass houses, these assistants usually didn't live past the age of 42 (I just turned 42 this year!).

How sad to see pictures of the breaker boys in the coal mines hunched over, all day long, picking the slate and stones from the coal. The foreman would hit them on their heads or shoulders with a broom handle if he thought they weren't working hard enough. If they fell into the coal chute, they would quickly be smothered to death. Do you think shucking oysters or peeling shrimp would be easier? The shrimp oozed an acid that would eat holes in leather shoes and tin pails, yet children had to handle these with their bare little fingers. 4-year old Mary could shuck two pails of oysters each day, making 10 cents. One mother and her 4 children worked in their tenement apartment making paper forget-me-not-flowers. All 5 of them sat working every day, all day long, working by the light of a kerosene lamp. The youngest, Angelica, was 3-years old and could make 540 flowers a day, earning her family 5 cents.

I think most children and adults today have no clue what life was really like for people back then; how hard they had to work for such little pay. I can't imagine my 5-year old doing what these kids were forced to do, let alone go without Nick Jr. for one day. I think this is an excellent book for children and adults to read and discuss. I plan on having my 14-year old read it this year for school. It's a book definitely worth reading and looking at.

kids at work
By Elyse Palmer
This is a nonfiction photographic essay book that will touch any reader's heart. Mr. Freedman seems to know the facts and life of Mr. Hine very well. There is an extensive bibliography at the end of the book as wee. The information at the end seemed hard to believe but true. The book is only 11 years old so the facts aren't that dated. There are many saddening facts in this book. It reveals the truths about child labor in the text and photos.

The book was written to shine light on child labor history and to showcase some of Mr. Hine's photographs. The book is very interesting to read. There are quotes from some kids who worked in the factories and also some quotes from Mr. Hine who took great pride in accurately recording the facts about his subjects. This book could spark an interest in further study of this topic.

The information in this book is broken down and presented in an understandable order. The text is a harsh reality but it is presented well. The style gets the reader emotionally involved. The language is relatively simple and easy to read.

The information is laid out well and the references are listed in the back. There is a table of contents and bibliography and acknowledgement page.

The photos are a wonderful enhancement. The book would be nothing with out them. They are strategically placed and make the book what it is. There are captions that describe the pictures and they are discussed in the text.

This book could be used in the classroom to show what life was like and to talk about immigration and economic conditions.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, by Jamie Ford

In the opening pages of Jamie Ford’s stunning debut novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle’s Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.

This simple act takes old Henry Lee back to the 1940s, at the height of the war, when young Henry’s world is a jumble of confusion and excitement, and to his father, who is obsessed with the war in China and having Henry grow up American. While “scholarshipping” at the exclusive Rainier Elementary, where the white kids ignore him, Henry meets Keiko Okabe, a young Japanese American student. Amid the chaos of blackouts, curfews, and FBI raids, Henry and Keiko forge a bond of friendship–and innocent love–that transcends the long-standing prejudices of their Old World ancestors. And after Keiko and her family are swept up in the evacuations to the internment camps, she and Henry are left only with the hope that the war will end, and that their promise to each other will be kept.

Forty years later, Henry Lee is certain that the parasol belonged to Keiko. In the hotel’s dark dusty basement he begins looking for signs of the Okabe family’s belongings and for a long-lost object whose value he cannot begin to measure. Now a widower, Henry is still trying to find his voice–words that might explain the actions of his nationalistic father; words that might bridge the gap between him and his modern, Chinese American son; words that might help him confront the choices he made many years ago.

Set during one of the most conflicted and volatile times in American history, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is an extraordinary story of commitment and enduring hope. In Henry and Keiko, Jamie Ford has created an unforgettable duo whose story teaches us of the power of forgiveness and the human heart.

"Sentimental, heartfelt….the exploration of Henry’s changing relationship with his family and with Keiko will keep most readers turning pages...A timely debut that not only reminds readers of a shameful episode in American history, but cautions us to examine the present and take heed we don’t repeat those injustices."-- Kirkus Reviews

“A tender and satisfying novel set in a time and a place lost forever, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet gives us a glimpse of the damage that is caused by war--not the sweeping damage of the battlefield, but the cold, cruel damage to the hearts and humanity of individual people. Especially relevant in today's world, this is a beautifully written book that will make you think. And, more importantly, it will make you feel."
-- Garth Stein, New York Times bestselling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain

“Jamie Ford's first novel explores the age-old conflicts between father and son, the beauty and sadness of what happened to Japanese Americans in the Seattle area during World War II, and the depths and longing of deep-heart love. An impressive, bitter, and sweet debut.”
-- Lisa See, bestselling author of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

From Publishers Weekly
Ford's strained debut concerns Henry Lee, a Chinese-American in Seattle who, in 1986, has just lost his wife to cancer. After Henry hears that the belongings of Japanese immigrants interned during WWII have been found in the basement of the Panama Hotel, the narrative shuttles between 1986 and the 1940s in a predictable story that chronicles the losses of old age and the bewilderment of youth. Henry recalls the difficulties of life in America during WWII, when he and his Japanese-American school friend, Keiko, wandered through wartime Seattle. Keiko and her family are later interned in a camp, and Henry, horrified by America's anti-Japanese hysteria, is further conflicted because of his Chinese father's anti-Japanese sentiment. Henry's adult life in 1986 is rather mechanically rendered, and Ford clumsily contrasts Henry's difficulty in communicating with his college-age son, Marty, with Henry's own alienation from his father, who was determined to Americanize him. The wartime persecution of Japanese immigrants is presented well, but the flatness of the narrative and Ford's reliance on numerous cultural cliches make for a disappointing read. (Feb.)

From School Library Journal
Adutl/High School—Henry Lee is a 12-year-old Chinese boy who falls in love with Keiko Okabe, a 12-year-old Japanese girl, while they are scholarship students at a prestigious private school in World War II Seattle. Henry hides the relationship from his parents, who would disown him if they knew he had a Japanese friend. His father insists that Henry wear an "I am Chinese" button everywhere he goes because Japanese residents of Seattle have begun to be shipped off by the thousands to relocation centers. This is an old-fashioned historical novel that alternates between the early 1940s and 1984, after Henry's wife Ethel has died of cancer. A particularly appealing aspect of the story is young Henry's fascination with jazz and his friendship with Sheldon, an older black saxophonist just making a name for himself in the many jazz venues near Henry's home. Other aspects of the story are more typical of the genre: the bullies that plague Henry, his lack of connection with his father, and later with his own son. Readers will care about Henry as he is forced to make decisions and accept circumstances that separate him from both his family and the love of his life. While the novel is less perfect as literature than John Hamamura's Color of the Sea (Thomas Dunne, 2006), the setting and quietly moving, romantic story are commendable.—Angela Carstensen, Convent of the Sacred Heart, New York City

From Booklist
Ford vacillates between a front story dominated by nostalgia and a backstory dominated by fear. The front story struggles to support the weight of the backstory, and the complexity Ford brings to the latter is the strength of this debut novel, which considers a Chinese American man’s relationship with a Japanese American woman in the 1940s and his son in the 1980s. Although Ford does not have anything especially novel to say about a familiar subject (the interplay between race and family), he writes earnestly and cares for his characters, who consistently defy stereotype. Ford posits great meaning in objects—a button reading “I am Chinese” and a jazz record, in particular—but the most striking moments come from the characters’ readings of each other: “Henry couldn’t picture bathing with his parents the way some Japanese families did. He couldn’t picture himself doing a lot of things with his parents. . . . He felt his stomach turn a little. His heart raced when he thought about Keiko, but his gut tightened just the same.” --Kevin Clouther

One of my favorite books ever
By L. K. Messner
I was excited to read this book because I knew it was set in Seattle during the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, and that's a time period that has always interested me. I expected an interesting trip through history, but what I got was so, so much more than that.

Henry Lee is still mourning the death of his wife when he learns that the belongings of Japanese Americans hidden in the basement of Seattle's Panama Hotel for decades have been discovered. Henry is drawn to the basement, and what he's searching for there opens a door he thought he had closed forever. The story switches back and forth between 1986 and the 1940s, when a 12-year-old Henry attending an American school (he's "scholarshipping" as his father likes to say) meets another international student working in the school kitchen. Keiko is Japanese American, the enemy according to Henry's father, but the two become best friends before her family is imprisoned in one of the relocation camps.

This book does a phenomenal job exploring the history and attitudes of this time period, and Ford's portrayal of Seattle's ethnic neighborhoods is amazing. But really, the thing that pulled me into this novel the most was the richness of the relationships -- Henry and Keiko, Henry and his father, Henry's mother and his father, and Henry and his own son. HOTEL ON THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET looks at the best and worst of human relationships, the way we regard others, the way we find ourselves reenacting our relationships with our parents with our own children, the choices we make along the way. Mostly, though, this book reminds us that there is always room -- and time -- for forgiveness and redemption.

I finished this book in tears, moved by the people who came to life so vividly in this story and sad that it had to end at all. HOTEL ON THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET is a perfect, perfect choice for book clubs or for anyone craving a compelling story about human nature at its worst and at its best. An amazing, amazing book. It will be one of your favorites, I can almost promise.

A story of hope
By Pippa Lee
As I wipe my teary eyes, I am amazed at the extraordinary journey I have just experienced reading Jamie Ford's "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet."

The hotel is the Panama Hotel, an old dilapidated landmark in Seattle. It's 1986 and 56-year-old Henry Lee is among the onlookers who witness the unveiling of recently discovered belongings left in the basement of the hotel by Japanese families in the 1940s. To Henry, however, the trunks, suitcases and crates and their contents are not just mere curiosities or historical artifacts. For him, they bring remembrances of the World War II years, of being twelve years old and trying to fit in an all-white school while following Chinese cultural traditions at home; of being Asian and his father's dread that he would be confused with the enemy, the Japanese. Most importantly, they bring back memories of a special friendship with Keiko, the only other kid of Asian ethnicity in school.

As Ford deftly switches the narrative from 1986 to the 1940s and vice versa, the readers are taken through a remarkable story that is both sweet and poignant. For me, it brought history to life. All too often we forget that behind the numbers, there were individuals and lives that were deeply affected by the fear, the uncertainty and the hatred. I confess that there were many moments that I was on the verge of tears, such as when young Henry looks on Japanese American families burning their personal belongings for fear that they would be accused of cooperating with Japan or when Keiko and Henry witness the "evacuation" of Bainbridge Island. I also felt moved by Henry, the adult, who is still reeling from the death of his wife. His inability to emotionally connect with his own son, and his struggle to find his own identity as both American and Chinese are familiar to me as I'm too the daughter of Chinese immigrants.

Ford's novel is a story with many layers. But I was most impressed and touched by the author's honest and unflinching portrayal of the sentiments that pervaded the years after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Sentiments that led to acts and events that we would rather trivialized or forget today. The fact that they were acted out not only by adults but also by children made them more painful to read about.

I highly recommend this novel to those who remember their first love, have heard about the Japanese American internment camps, or strive to bridge two cultural worlds and to those who just love a good story. To all of you, there is a room waiting at the "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet."

historical, emotionally compelling and inspiring story
By Charlie Anderson
Henry Lee is a grown man nearing the end of his life. He has recently lost his wife to cancer and struggles to bridge the gap in his relationship with his college-attending son. One day he comes upon artifacts being unearthed from inside the Panama Hotel, and he is thrown back into a swirl of memories from his childhood, from a time when he promised to protect a family’s most precious possessions. Henry reflects on his friendship with Keiko, and he continues to sift through the remains in the Panama Hotel, looking for the belongings of Keiko and her family, and enlists his son and his girlfriend to assist him…while he slowly tells his story of friendship, defiance, and commitment to his own son.

The Players
Henry – a young Chinese-American boy torn in a world of white vs. Chinese. vs. Japanese

Sheldon – a black Jazz player Henry befriends

Keiko – a young Japanese-American girl who ends up attending Henry’s all-white school

Ms. Beatty – the school cook responsible for Henry and Keiko’s scholarshipping duties at school

Marty – Henry’s privileged son; Chinese-American living in a modern world

Samantha – Marty’s Caucasion girlfriend

The Quote
He walked to school each day, going upstream against a sea of Chinese kids who called him “white devil.” He worked in the school kitchen as white devils called him “yellow.”

Prosperity didn’t seem to reach locals like Sheldon. He was a polished jazz player, whose poverty had less to do with his musical ability and more to do with his color. Henry had liked him immediately. Not because they both were outcasts, although if he really thought about it, that might have had a ring of truth to it – no, he liked him because of his music. Henry didn’t know what jazz was, he knew only it was something his parents didn’t listen to, and that made him like it even more.

He thought about those three Japanese couple laying facedown on the dirty floor of the Black Elks Club in their evening finery. Being hauled out and jailed somewhere. He stared back at Mr. Preston, a man trying to buy land out from under families who were now burning their most precious possessions to keep from being called traitors or spies.

The Highs and Lows
Henry’s Inner Conflict. Henry is most conflicted in following his father’s rules and expectations. He ends up doing things that outright defy his father, and others that are done on the sly. Regardless, Henry spends three years being ignored by his father entirely, and told during such highly emotional times that he is a stranger, that he is dead to his father. Henry must choose between what is right and his father’s hatred for the Japanese. For a highly traditional family, it is not something that is easy for Henry, but it is something he must do.

+ Keiko. She is such a sweetheart with such a love for life. She is all things bright and warm and fun and loving for Henry. She makes him feel alive and like there is more outside his father’s household. She stalwartly stands up for who she is – Japanese-American. Despite several instances when Henry could have saved Keiko from her fate by wearing his “I’m Chinese” button, Keiko refused. She endured the unjust punishment on her heritage.

– Henry’s Father. Henry’s father migrated to the United States at age 13, after having quit school. He works in the neighborhood fighting to protect the Chinese and their cause. He fights for China on US soil. He fights for China in China. He fights for China in Japan and in Russia. He does everything possible on the ground in the US to support his cause, and he is a highly respected individual in this community.

Marty. Marty’s appearance at the beginning of the book painted him as a disgustingly privileged young American boy living it up at college. As the book goes on, though, and Henry’s relationship with his son deepens, there is more to Marty than meets the eye. Henry is so afraid that his son will not approve of his childhood friendship with Keiko that he at first does not want to tell their story for fear of tarnishing his late wife’s memory, but Marty is a young man who believes in happiness.
Fathers and Sons. Henry mentions on more than one occasion his own perspective of his relationship with his father, comparable to a widening gulf with no conversation and very little reaction. At one point, he realizes he had enacted and enforced the same type of relationship with his own son, continuing the cycle, and makes a conscious choice not to.

Ms. Beatty. The school kitchen cook is more than meets the eye. She seems like a lazy, smoking white woman with little regard for the Asians working in her kitchen, but nothing could be further from the truth. When things get really sticky for Henry or Keiko, Ms. Beatty is there. She shows up the white kids who picked on Henry and Keiko. When Keiko is gone and in the internment camp, Ms. Beatty finds a way for Henry to get to her. Turns out Ms. Beatty has much at stake like Henry and Keiko. She’s just doing what she can.

Racism, Prejudices and People of Color. Yes, this book has it all: African-Americans, Chinese-Americans and Japanese-Americans in a time when all were shunned and unwanted in a homogeneous white society. They are left on the fringes, and even turn against one another – at least, the Chinese against the Japanese. They must make the clear distinction they are not Japanese, hence the “I am Chinese” button Henry’s father requires him to wear.

The Friendship. Henry and Keiko have such a beautiful childhood friendship. True, it is forged on the fringes of nonacceptance, exclusion and rejection by attending an all-white school – and having to scholarshipping through it.

Power of the Words. The language and images that Ford paints are absolutely beautiful. She creates such a world of nostalgia that forces the reader to reminisce with Henry, and fall in love alongside him.

The Take-Away
When Henry takes Keiko to the Black Elks Club, it is such a beautiful scene. I love it.

Recommendation – Buy, Borrow or Skip?
Buy it. This is not one to skip past, and I definitely wouldn’t borrow it.
