Interesting premise, extremely flawed execution

I'm a fan of SF which deals with concepts taken to the edge. This book is definitely in that region, covering a world government combining all the worst of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union under Stalin. The government is actually implementing a genocide of billions.

And yet, I wanted to throw the book across the room many times. I didn't since that would have ruined the Kindle. But the desire was there.

The book had the sophistication of what a high school english course assignment would produce. If the writer was drunk. Let me count the ways.

First, a recent issue of Analog discussed "information dump", where an author shows off his research by spewing pages of background information. Asher did this so much that the dump exceeded the content, especially in the first quarter of the book. He had the option of trying to hide at least some of this dump as something passed to the main character by an AI. But he didn't. Just dreadful.

The point of view constantly switches from 3rd person, to the thoughts of one or another of the characters, sometimes sentence by sentence. We get no warning or transition. It's hard to follow.

He will spend pages on the grisly details of a laser attack from space against an Earth spaceport, seen from monitors on the asteroid. We see things that you might have missed even if you were present at the spaceport. Optics are really good in the future, apparently. In contrast, important things, such as the evolution of the main character over several months, we get in a single paragraph.

But most frustrating for me was the author's vague handling of gravity. On Mars, the characters do take the low pressure into account most of the time. But the gravity, only a bit over 1/3 of Earth, never causes a problem. On an asteroid, the main character happily jogs across the surface. At times, there is a mention of using special boots in the tunnels. Then, on the same page, everyone happily acts like they're on terra-firma. When the asteroid's fusion engine lights up, the result as if the asteroid suddenly picked up super gravity. Characters floating in space, in all directions around the station, entirely disconnected from it, suddenly fall and splat. I could go on. The author's gravity lacks gravity.

And speaking of the asteroid, I never did get a good understanding of how the rotating section worked. It could stop and start at will, and transport ships had no problems with docking.

The main character, super smart, gets super dumb when it suits the narrative. The Enemy, also super smart, gets super dumb when the main character needs to be rescued from a predicament. Everyone is comic book quality. Sigh.

The violence is graphic and excessive. It adds nothing to the story.

Lastly, I found the use of "whilst" instead of "while" throughout the book very jarring. I checked it online. Even in the UK, use of that word is archaic and/or snobbish. The editors should have wiped this out.

People look for different things in books. For me, this book was poorly written, poorly scienced, and poorly characterized. The author must have his attention elsewhere whilst writing it.

Bourne Identity Space Opera

Welcome to a future where a lot of things have gone wrong. Democracy is a thing of the past. The bureaucracies of the world have taken over. The Commission sounds suspiciously close to the European Commission which I guess is not something Neal Asher is fond of. The environment is unpleasant and overpopulation needs a final solution. At least that's what the people in power seem to be planning. Rebellion is hard since the Commission controls orbital laser weapons that can destroy any riot in seconds. They also dispatch robots troops straight out of the war of the worlds to pick up any ringleaders for torture and brainwashing.

It is a chilling world where people are classified after their usefulness to society. Zero-assets are more or less dumped to fetch for themselves. Usefulness is of course assigned by The Commission.

This is the world where this electrifying story takes place. Saul is a man with extraordinary skills and intellect but who can't remember what the things you put on your feet and walk in are. He wakes up in a box on the verge of incineration but escape bent on revenge. We get to follow his trail through what is left of Europe and Russia as he learns the world again. In a way this reminded me of a story by A. E. Van Vogt named Tyranpolis (aka Future Glitter from 1973) where the hero instead has a scientific breakthrough in an all-seeing kind of technology while Saul here goes for the AI interfaced brain that Neal seems so fond of (See Gridlinked).

The Yin of the story is a woman called Var who probably is Saul's lost sister. She struggles at the abandoned colony on Mars where the political officer is trying to kill off all none essential people to make the resources last longer. Her story and Paul's take turns in a way that fits well with the story and keep the reader interested.

There is a lot of good action down on earth and up at an orbital fortress but you never feel that the ending is in any doubt which is a bit sad in an otherwise excellent story. I can live with that and still enjoy the story but I have a high tolerance for characters like that.

The Departure is a good first novel in the Owner trilogy and the significance of that name for the series intrigues me. I want to know what happens next. I don't think The Departure is for everyone but it is a good standard fare science fiction with a bit of social critique and a lot of action.

The next book in the series Zero Point will be out next year probably around the same time as this one.

A great start to a promising new series

After seeing the negative comments of some reviewers, I have to wonder whether we read the same book. The observations made by two of them led me to believe the wheels would fall off the story at 100 pages. But it didn't; if anything, the pace picked up and pushed through all the way to the end. The end leaves you dangling--really a conclusion rather than an end of story--but this was expected since I understood the book to be an introduction to an ongoing new series. I also don't agree with the reference to shallow or two-dimensional characters. Though the story is told in a much different contextual background, the development of the major protagonist, Alan Saul, very much reminded me of the introduction to Ian Cormac in "Gridlinked." I will admit that the parallel story about Var on Mars did not mesh well with the story-in-chief, but it didn't seriously detract from it either.

I think some of the Asher fans were disappointed because they were expecting "The Departure" to be another Polity-like novel with a fresh cast of characters. Well, it wasn't that at all: Asher completely broke the mold this time to create a darkly dystopian future more reminiscent of the works of Philip K. Dick and George Orwell. I highly recommend it to all fans of hard SF and look forward to the release of the next installment in the series.

He excavates Wyndham Lewis's hidden borrowings from Al Jolson's The Jazz Singer; situates Djuna Barnes between the imagery of haute couture and the intellectualism of Duchamp; uncovers Beckett's affinities with Giacometti's surrealist sculptures and the Bolshevik clowns Bim-Bom; and considers Mina Loy as both visionary writer and designer of decorative lampshades. Miller's lively and engaging readings of culture in this turbulent period reveal its surprising anticipation of our own postmodernity.

a better book than first meets the eye

I was first drawn to this book while waiting for my paramour outside of a popular but nameless Manhattan bookstore. She was late, as always, and to kill the time I skimmed the remainder bins, where some untutored storeclerk had remorselessly dumped several copies of Miller's "Late Modernism." Was it the light winter breeze against my exposed neck, or Miller's icy analytical touch, as he claws his way through the work of Barnes, Joyce, and Brothers that produced that uncanny frisson of feeling I felt as I turned from page to page? Who can say. Clearly Miller has fulfilled the wish of Eliot's Prufrock, and we as readers feel compelled, altogether willingly, to scuttle silently across the pages of "Late Modernism." Reviewers on the book's jacket had promised readers a "crabbed journey through the unnoticed grottoes of late modernism, and at the same time, a forward walking approach to literary theory." Miller delivers. As Miller suggests, form and content can be conceived against the legendary late modernist binary of the shell and the inside, and with Miller's unrelenting hermenuetic in hand, we as readers become the recipients of the most succulent morsels of this most crustaceous period in Western literature. Miller casts his nets wide, revealing the fallacy of the classic distinction between the figurative and the littoral, which in recent criticism of this period has become something of a red herring. In the end, we recognize as readers what Miller has apparently known all along: that the crabs of modernism outnumber those of any cheap hotel.

trouble to digest this book

This book, very puzzling. I read last night on way back from very excellent smorgasborg dinner at friend house. He make extra fine meatloaf with bread and also butter. I never so full. In all my life, I say, and very happy too. So then what? I read book. So depressing, you see. Mr. Tyrus Miller, he crack open modernism like rotten coconut and pour out spoiled milk for all to see. Now I am so sick and in pain, surely I die soon.

Sh*t Sandwich: a good comic effort

After "The Rants" and "Ranting Again", Miller really delivers here. If you liked his work on Saturday Night Live, you will really enjoy this work, which should've been titled "Late Night Modernism." I didn't know whether to laugh or take out a note pad. Miller's parody of academic idiom reproduces the real thing so closely that it might fool a tenured mind. His comparision of Beckett with Giacommetti was a hoot, but bringing in Bim and Bom went too far- that is my only gripe. Fans of Miller might have expected in this context a kind of "Surrealist Weekend Update." But the knotted and loopy references of his stand up routine have been translated well into pseudo-academic style, including footnotes. His pidgin academic is a veritable laugh griot.

Couldn't finish it. Snoozer

I love the Bishop series, so I thought I would give this one a chance. Couldn't finish it, kept falling asleep. No action. The instant "love connection"??? Frankly, if I met a man who professed to being in love with me 5 minutes after we met, I would run like my pants were on fire to get away from him. I completely gave up on it when the wounded wolf entered the story.

This was one of Kay Hoopers worse books. I have read many of her books and enjoyed all of them except this one. No plot, slow and very boring. If I had it to do over again I would not waste my time or money.

Outstanding

Kay Hooper does it again with a book out of the norm and the suspense is high... Cassie Neill has a power that she isn't too pleased to have. She inherited from her mother and her mother's mother before her etc. She can enter the mind of a madman and help the police to catch him. Cassie is a psychic. After a horrible experience in Los Angeles she moves several hundred miles away to Ryan's Bluff. A nice peaceful and small town. Suddenly her world is turned upside down again. There's a killer out there and she knows what he's doing. She puts her life on the line again to help a cynical cop and a believing district attorney to solve this case. This could be her last case because when she enters the mind of a madman she may not be able to get out.

The story wasn't that bad, but the errors and typos were so numerous and distracting that I started feeling pissed off and I almost didn't bother to read act 3 at all. After a while, because of the way this was written, I couldn't tell whether Santino knew Brown was a cop... Also, Hill's real name changed from Hill St. Claire to Shane Hill (WTF)?

Good read,however, a lot of grammatical errors and confusion of person.
Examples: Through instead of threw
Confusion of person in story speaking of him however, stating her.
A lot of proof reading needed with the story.
A criminal who sells women into slavery and a law enforcement agent undercover falls in love with the same modern dancer that works for a burlesque club own by the Santino the criminial.

The book covers 'just enough' to get people writing tests and abstraction layers. For example, the book cover the basics of Inheritance, but doesn't really cover Interfaces in detail. We explain the concept of Interfaces, because we need to know it to understand Collections, but not how to write them.



Why? Because the book covers enough to get you started, and working. But not overload the reader. Once you are on your way, and have gained some experience. You should have the basic knowledge to understand the additional concepts.



Why 'for testers'?



Java Developers coding production applications in Java need to learn Java differently from other people on the team.



Throughout the author's career, he has have written thousands of lines of Java code, but has rarely had to compile the code into an application. Yet, when we learn Java from most books, one of the first things we learn is 'javac' and the 'main' method and working from the command line. And this is confusing.



Most of the code the author writes is wrapped up in a JUnit @Test method.



The author has trained many people to write automation in Java, and everytime he has taught Java to testers or other people on the team, we start with a JUnit @Test method and run tests from the IDE.



Testers, and other people on the team use java differently. This book provides a different order and approach to learning Java.

HUGE return for such a small price!

Alan is 'The Man' when it comes to learning about software test automation from the ground up. I have him to thank for giving me the resources to get up to speed on a whole new way of testing (programming and automation) and for making me a great deal more employable in the process. For tester/programmers of any level, this book is a tremendous resource and reference. In the book he lays the groundwork and good habits you will need in order to create a test suite that is maintainable and has lasting value. It's Java specific, so bear that in mind if you're currently tied to running Selenium under a different language, but many of the principles he describes can be applied in any language that Selenium supports.

I cannot recommend this book and/or his video course strongly enough. If you're an old SQA dawg like I was with an interest in programming but very little practical experience, even if the thought of actually making sense of a Java IDE like Eclipse makes you tremble, jump in! There's much to learn but Alan beats a path that leads directly to creating automated tests in Java and Selenium with very little fluff or distractions. And if you persist you will get there in short order, and reach a level where you can begin to research and answer your own questions. I go back to this book again and again and always find something new to learn.
