About the Author

Kathryn Hansen is a leading scholar of South Asian theatre history, especially the Hindi and Urdu vernacular traditions of North India.  She has authored ‘Grounds for Play: The Nautanki Theatre of North India’, translated ‘The Parsi Theatre: Its Origins and Development’, and co-edited ‘A Wilderness of Possibilities: Urdu Studies in Transnational Perspective’. She holds the position of Professor in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

Inaccuracies

I haven't read the whole book, but it contains inaccuracies. I was absolutely amazed when someone drew my attention to the fact that it alleges that my Anglo-Indian great grandmother, Mary Jane Fenton, who was born in Landour on 7 September 1846, later become an actress in India! (p. 16). The book contains other inaccuracies about Mary's life history. For example, Mary's father, Mathew Fenton (who was killed in the first Sikh War before Mary was born) was NOT Irish (as this book claims). As for Mathew's widow, Janet, she married again soon after Mary was born and baptised at Landour. Janet's new husband was James Feldwick, who then brought Janet - and his stepdaughter, Mary Fenton - back to England. It was in England that Mary then grew up and married. I have a photograph of Mary - and I look after her grave in Brighton!

Overview of Indian life, culture and economy in the 19th Century

This book is a very readable account of life in India as the various regions gradually began to form an "Indian" culture that is distinct from the many local or regional cultures. The autobiographies are held together with commentary by the author at the beginning of each chapter and also with helpful notes to provide context for readers that might miss nuances in the stories. The book is interesting for students of history, economics, communal relations, political science and also religion. All of these aspects of life in India during the 19th Century are evident in the stories of these major participants in the theater world. Bollywood is a success story for diversity due to the culture of meritocracy that was introduced in the entertainment world of Parsi Theater. Parsi entrepreneurs bring Muslim entertainers to an industry that could not be financially viable without an appeal to the Hindu mass audiences who are attracted by religious themes in plots and in accompanying music. This is still a theme in modern India where minorities are proportionately represented in Bollywood in far higher percentages than in the population as a whole. This book is lucidly written with a flow that comes from a scholarly writer (that carefully notes her sources) with a flair that makes complex subject matter a pleasure to read.

A radical rethink

A CURRENT AND RADICAL RETHINK ON CONTRACT LAW: AN IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEBATE

Victor P. Goldberg, who writes this book, is Jerome L. Greene Professor of Transactional Law at Columbia University. His observations on contract law, which he generally approaches from an economic perspective – are meticulously argued and more often than not, radical.

How appropriate then, that this volume has been included as one of the latest titles in Edward Elgar’s ‘Rethinking Law’ series. Contract doctrines, which most regard as efficient, are, in Professor Goldberg’s view, terribly inefficient in many instances. Just how and why he reaches this conclusion is explained in detail in this thoughtful and analytical work, which is incorporates about a dozen (if you check the index) of the author’s previous essays and articles. Many of these have been revised and presented with new material as a follow-up.

As indicated by the title, the book focusses on how parties to a contract ‘design’ their contractual relations. With such an approach, says Goldberg, the reader can ‘glean… insights into doctrinal reform and contract interpretations.’

Conceivably such a stance is useful in the more complex contractual disputes, which don’t include those involving everyday consumer contracts, or ‘agreements between amateurs’. ‘For my purposes,’ says the author, ‘the category is defined by agreements for which both parties could be expected to have access to counsel.’

The subject matter of the essays contained in the book is diverse and illuminating, as numerous US cases are analysed with a view to reassessing key doctrines in contract law with a view to possible reforms. Yes, the context of the book is American, but its focus throughout is on contract design, as well as, in the words of the author, ‘the economic problems confronting contracting parties and the tools for coping with them.’

The book is divided into four sections to include direct damages… consequential damages… excuse and changed circumstances… (including the excuse doctrine)… and finally offer and acceptance, with reference to specific cases throughout. What seems to emerge throughout these discussions, as you would expect, are inconsistencies, controversies and debate.

For instance, in the first two sections of the book which focus on remedies, the example is cited of two cases in which a book publisher accepted an author’s manuscript, then refused to publish it. In one case, the unfortunate author received a nominal six cents; in the other case, the author won restitution for his or her time of over $300,000. (Sounds like the second author had a better lawyer!)

Certainly this book offers valuable insights and new perspectives on the often thorny problems of contract law as it can -- and does -- affect ‘sophisticated parties’. Lawyers as well as academics on both sides of the Atlantic will welcome the important contribution made here to the ongoing debates which rage continually within this core area of the law.

The Vicar of Christ reads like fact versus fiction.

I read this book about 20 years ago and I am enjoying the pleasure of reading it again. The characters in the book are real for me. It's well written and the story flows from decade to decade.

An engaging read

A fine novel, now somewhat dated after a quarter century, about Declan Walsh's journey from soldier to Supreme Court chief justice to monk to Pope. Told as narrations, being told to a reporter who is a minor character in the novel. The Korea sequence and the Papal portion (especially the retelling of the Papal election) are the best parts--time has passed by the court portion. The epilogue is very good as well.

A vivid portrayal of an imaginary "great man."

This is an extraordinary novel of the same genre as "The Shoes of the Fisherman." It portrays the imaginary life of one Declan Walsh. The author's stylistic method is extraordinarily effective. The author uses as a setting a reporter interviewing three different (imaginary) intimates of Walsh. Each of these interviewees: a Marine Corps gunnery sergeant, a Supreme Court Justice, and a Catholic Cardinal, paints a different portrayal of Walsh, and incidentally also presents the reader with a fascinating character study in his own right.
In the novel, Declan Walsh lives an extraordinary life: he is a Medal of Honor winner in Korea, he later becomes Chief Justice of the United States. He resigns his post on the Supreme Court in the face of personal tragedy, and later is selected as Pope by a deadlocked Church conclave.
My favorite portion of the novel is the first third, which deals with Walsh as a Marine Corps battalion commander in Korea. The depiction of men in combat, the leadership issues, the life and death decisions, and above all the hard fighting and hard dying are powerfully done. The reader can feel the cold Korean night, and share the Marines' honest fear and bravery as tough infantry combat rages. I have never read a more realistic and authentic story of men in combat.
The second section of the novel deals with Walsh as Chief Justice. The legal issues are pretty much passe' now--they deal with issues circa 1964-1975. However, this portion of the novel retains its relevance despite this because it gives an interesting insight into the decision making process within the Court, and again the portrayal of Walsh is wonderfully done.
The last section of the novel deals with Walsh as Pope. It is not dated in any significant way, because the Church has not grappled with most of the issues portrayed in the novel. Again, the author takes us into the Catholic Church and explains some of the politics, infighting, and differences in ideology that permeat the world's oldest beauracracy. One need not be a Catholic to find this fascinating.
The best thing about this novel is the quality of the writing. Murphy's prose is clear, wonderfully stylistic, and extremely entertaining. Many of the characters in the novel literally seem to spring to life, so well done are Murphy's characterizations. Murphy's characters act and seem like real people living real lives at all times. I have read this novel many times over the years and I regard it as one of the best reads I have ever experienced. Highly recommended.

But, she reasons, if you don't have a mother, maybe a sister would help. Maybe lots of sisters, a worldwide sisterhood. Be like everyone else, do what others do, and best of all, be part of the "in" group. Then you have sympathy and protection.

It is with this in mind that Alice joins the All-Stars Fan Club and the earring club and becomes one of the Famous Eight. It helps, even when it's a bit boring. On the whole, Alice thinks, she is enjoying seventh grade more than she had ever expected.

Yet Sisterhood, even Famous Eighthood, does not take care of all of her problems or answer all of her questions about life and love. Can she be Sisters with all three girls who want to be her brother Lester's girlfriends? How does she treat the fact that her father is dating her teacher, Miss Summers? How do you accept a box of valentine candy from a boy? In fact, how do boys fit into Universal Sisterhood -- or is there a Universal Humanhood? How far do you go when being part of the crowd means doing something you don't want to do?

As in the earlier Alice books, Alice copes with life in her own way, and her answers to her endless problems are often funny and surprisingly right.

It is about fitting in with certain peers*

All but Alice was a great book to read. It is about when Alice wants a bulletin board, her ears pierced, and even joins two clubs-The Earring Club and the All-Stars Fan Club. She works at the Melody Inn for three hours and wants to be part of the "in" crowd at school.
Alice may act different in this book out of the other books, but I know how that feels. You act different when you are in a different and a snobbier club and then realize of how idiotic you were to people who didn't pick on you at all.
It is not like Alice picks on anyone in this novel, but it was cruel of her to embarrass her friend Elizabeth like that. One of the Three Handsome Stooges likes and picks on Alice a lot. Alice feels different and one of the Popular and the Beautiful people at her school.
But the truth is, Alice gets so sick of Brian (one of the 3 Stooges) picking on her. Even in one of the chapters, he puts her face in the snow for fun like it is funny. And on Valentine's Day, her ex-boyfriend Patrick comes over and gives her a big box of chocolates.
Alice didn't realize that she had to share them with him for some weird reason. So Lester tells her that and she reinvites him over.
Lester has a Woman Situation again! Loretta Jenkins (who works at his dad's store) likes him! Lester just wants to take a break from dating and concentrate on homework. Or, in other words, L-I-F-E. Meaning a "non-female-dating-crisis" life.
And turns out that Alice's dad goes out with her 7th-grade Language Arts teacher Miss Summers. Again. And he gives her a Vivaldi cassette. AND, turns out that Alice becomes herself again, kisses Patrick again (because he threw up on the bus and Brian told Alice to make fun of him when he comes back but she comes to the rescue and they talk and then kiss on the bus. Yep. Just like that!), and quits the Earring Club (I think) and the All-Stars Fan CLub.
The letter Alice wrote to a famous rock-star was very funny. Even though it was a joke, the person in charge of it mailed it to the star!
This was a good book for peoples out there who have trouble fitting in with the right people. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is a great author and knows how to describe a junior-high girl's life today.
So if you're bored, then I suggest reading All But Alice.

Not as good as the other Alice books...

It's the winter of Alice's seventh grade year, and all she wants is to fit in. She joins an "Earring Club," but soon finds it rather monotonous to spend so much time shopping for and talking about mere jewelry. She also joins the All-Stars Fan Club, because all the popular kids are, and ends up writing fan mail to a rock star she doesn't even like.

Obviously, Alice's actions and reactions are typical of any junior high girl. The fact that she's always felt ostracized by the death of her mother when she was a preschooler only compounds Alice's need to fit in. However, Naylor has demonstrated her talent for taking simple concepts and making them into interesting, funny storylines in the other "Alice" books; this one just isn't up to par. Still, readers who enjoy the series will certainly want to read this book, simply for more Alice stories.

This book was pretty good, it didn't really have much of a climax, but it was a good book. The characters were well written, and she described the setting well. but what I liked was that even though this is from a series, you didn't have to read the ones before it to know what she was talking about. And if you have read the books before it, she isn't so repeatative that it gets boring.

In this book I didn't really have a favorite part. The entire book was really good - and it doesn't take forever to read.

Two story elements that Phyllis is great at, is how you preceive the characters. You can really see throughout the story how Alice's ideas and thoughts mature and differ from the beginning. She is also really good and letting you know what the theme of the book is. You don't have to think about it for three days to figure it out.
