Sharon has extensive experience in the area of university transfer and authored The Insider's Guide To Transferring (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2014). Great book for 1st generation college students, high school seniors, college freshmen, transfer students, and Veterans!!!

I wish I had this book when in college! Reading through the exercises and case studies, I realized it is packed with information that would have made my academic journey much shorter. Today, as a professional in the education and workforce field I can see how this book will help so many. I believe it can benefit high school seniors, college freshmen, first generation students, transfer students, Veterans, international students, and non-traditional or older students. The information can also be helpful for parents and other family members who need tools to guide and support their children with college related decisions.

The book includes a variety of exercises that can assist students gain multiple skills. Some of the exercises I found to be most useful were on how to set a budget, identify a learning style, effectively take notes, and plan a semester schedule. As a visual learner, I also appreciated that each chapter included a space to take notes and provided a section to write: things to think about, remember, and do.”

Also, the writer includes a section on multicultural and leadership practices that can benefit all students. A great part of the college experience is learning how to engage and work well with people from various ethnic and racial backgrounds, I truly believe this section would be useful for students to think about and learn how to gain these skills early on.

This is a great book for both new college students and parents! As the parent of a new college student I found the information very helpful. It has been 20+ years since I was in college and things have definitely changed. This book has a ton of great information. I like how the information is organized and easy to follow. The self assessment pages are very helpful at identifying where your student may need some help or more information on the topic. I like how the book talks about time and money management. Both are very important topics to discuss before your student goes off to college. Overall I highly recommend this book!

About the Author
ADELINA ANTHONY is a self-identified Xicana lesbian multi-disciplinary artista. The themes in her works address colonization, feminism, trauma, memory, gender, race/ethnicity, sexuality, in/migration, health, land/environment, and issues generally affecting the lesbian/ gay/ bisexual/ transgender/ two-spirited communities. With 20 years of experience acting, directing, writing and producing for theater, Anthony has garnered numerous nominations, honors and awards. One of her critically acclaimed solo plays, Bruising for Besos, has taken Anthony in a new and exciting direction, making a full transition as a writer-actor-director-producer for independent film. Forgiving Heart, her first short film as a writer-director is based on the teenage years of Yoli Villamontes, the protagonist of Bruising for Besos. The short film world-premiered at the Outfest Fusion LGBT Queer People of Color Film Festival’s Gala Screening in 2013, and has been turned into its own feature length screenplay. In addition, Anthony’s You’re Dead To Me was written as a participant of Film Independent’s Project Involve, and world-premiered at the L.A. Film Festival the summer of 2013. Because of her participation in Film Independent’s Project Involve program, she was awarded the 2013 Sony Pictures Diversity Fellowship. Working with her current screenwriting mentor, Ruth Atkinson, Anthony is developing the feature screenplay, But Not Buried, which is inspired by the Project Involve short film. Along with Marisa Becerra, Anthony is the co-founder/producer of the independent film company, AdeRisa Productions, based in Ventura, CA. The company is dedicated to producing bold, entertaining, and high caliber queer/trans people of color films—with an emphasis on X/Chicana stories. At the time of publication of this book, AdeRisa Productions is in the process of fundraising for its first feature film, Bruising for Besos. It is her intention to adapt The Beast of Times into an animated feature film in the future. A prolific artist, Anthony has been recognized by her communities and critics as one of the leading solo performers of her generation. Painting skin color in any realistic way is one of the most subtle and difficult tasks for any beginning artist. The traditional study of the early masters of portraiture limits the student, for the most part, to European Caucasians. Horton explores the full range of color differences among races and within races, from the smoothest young skin to the wrinkled marks of age. This book uses comprehensive charts and photographs to ground the student in mixing color in oils, acrylics, watercolors, and pastels. Subtleties of reflected color, hair color, and differences in exterior and interior lighting are all considered. Horton rounds out his very successful manual with examples of several artists' approaches to this daunting subject. This book should be in every art collection.

Indispensable guide to a difficult subject

I admit it: I bought this book for myself for a Christmas present, and it was well worth the price paid. Here is information I have never gotten in art school. Though it is probably entirely possible to learn to paint the face and figure by being presented with a model in a crowded and badly lit room, there has to be a better way, and I think this book is it. Through a clever system of charts using a palette of only 12 basic colors, author James Horton shows you how to create an infinite array of skin tones for people of pale, mid-tone and dark coloring. Specific modifications for pastellists are included, and though I'm just a beginner, I was amazed what I could do following his directions when I was only about a fourth of the way through the book. I recommend this very highly for all students, whether you're enrolled in an art course somewhere or just slugging it out on your own at home. I intend to finish every exercise in the book before I go back to art school at the end of January. Highly recommended!!!

I like this book. It's not the greatest, but it's not bad. If you're starting out painting and need some basic guidance for general skin colors it's probably ok. Where it's lacking is in most anything beyond the basic color of skin. There's no discussion of skin color in shadow, in the halftones where the skin turns away from the light, or where the skin blends into the hairline. Little about the affect of light, surroundings, or location (cheek, chin, forehead, etc.) on skin color either. Those things make or break portraits and some (me) just can't seem to mix the right colors to go with the basic skin tone of the model. I wish that had been addressed in this book... that would make it worth 5 stars (and maybe what people are asking for it these days).

Ben Peterson is an award winning innovator who's work has been featured in Popular Mechanics, National Geographic, Mechanical Engineering and the Clean Tech Open to name a few. I bought my copy of Ben Petersons book in late August on Amazon. Thanks!
I've had time now to compare it against the other 34 books, papers and pdf down loads in my woodgas collection. These range from 1907 to 2012 originally published. Only maybe three of these could you actually a complete system build from. And two of those three are also pay-for and they are only direct purchasable. The third a gov'mint "free" is literally a trash can system.
This book has more step by step pictures in it than any three other publications of mine combined.
This books system the widest size range of IC engine usability of them all. And this design addresses the limitations points in traditional designs. This will be very THERMALchemically balanced with it's three layers of insulations. Has Drop-in replaceable parts. NO Cones. NO range use limiting cyclone. Has a unique char gentle conserving active grate system. And a "majic box" four purpose heat/recycler fuel/economizer side box postulated but not done since 1974, and ~1944 pevious. And never done until now combining two 21st century benefits unique to this system.

This is nothing but a step by step instruction manual. None of the science is explained. Watch some youtube videos and you get the same info. Save your money!!!!!!
