About the Author
Pradhan Balter is a chiropractor, a computer consultant and owns a vegetarian restaurant and flower store in Chicago. Perhaps more relevant to this book, he has studied meditation for some 40 years with Indian spiritual Teacher Sri Chinmoy. When we was with his Teacher for just 2 years, Sri Chinmoy advised him "You should start speaking on the spiritual life." This simple counsel eventually brought him to 40 countries, speaking with thousands of seekers from all nationalities, races, religions, cultures and walks of life. This book reflects the collective lessons of that experience.

Supremely Thoughtful and Supremely Useful

This excellent guide is a Godsend to all who are interested in meditation. It will be of interest to anyone who would like to start a meditation practice, who is already meditating and would like to improve her practice,or who would like to teach others to meditate. The writing is clear, humorous,and folksy, and it eases the transition from our everyday outer lives to the inner discipline of a meditation practice. The book helps the reader to realize that meditation is for everyone, and not just for some far-out individuals who are already on their way to retreating to a cave in the Himalayas.
Many different meditation techniques are offered, so that everyone is bound to find at least a few that are valuable. Dr. Balter takes the reader from the first steps of meditation practice, through what has to be done as a person's practice becomes established, to subjects of interest to advanced spiritual seekers. Some of the topics covered are: "A meditative lifestyle," "The ABCs [of meditation]," "The nature of the mind," "Who am I?" and "The Law of karma." The author tells us enough about himself to make the illustrations of certain topics based on his own experiences both interesting and credible. He shows decisively that to be truly worthwhile, meditation must expand beyond the time spent meditating alone at home to the living of the whole life.
I found the discussion of the five "sheaths" of the human psyche, and the spiritual disciplines that can be used to illumine each of them, particularly helpful. Pradhan Balter states that he has been a student of spiritual Teacher Sri Chinmoy for over 40 years, and it is clear that he has spent those years well, absorbing and reflecting on the teachings that he received, and making them his own in ways that will be useful to a wide variety of people.
