The Science of Passion, by Antonella Zara, Antonella Yllana

Everything started with a great love. In fact, I believe that everything usually starts, somehow, through love. In my case, the greatest changes in my life came through the men that I have loved. Thanks to Life, I loved profoundly and intensely, and all that I have learned, I learned by loving. Only by going through all the pains and all the pleasures of love, without the reservations of not loving out of fear of what would happen, or what other people would think, there I found within me the energy necessary to believe in dreams.

I became aware of the existence of another person inside of me. I realized then that She had always been present, but more that ever I had perceived Her clearly. At first, this new sensation was strange to me, even though it filled me with a sort of happiness unknown until then. I wondered if this phenomenon happened only to me, if I was finally going crazy, if I had to seek medical help. But it was so good that it just couldn’t be a sickness! I resolved then to deepen my knowledge on the subject, and I came across vast literature that dealt with this kind of spirituality that had flourished in me. I began to understand that I had come into contact with what is called the “Higher Self”, the divine part, the soul, the particle of God that exists in everyone! I noticed that I had received an immense gift from Life as a reward for going after my dreams. For many people this might be incomprehensible or even absurd, which is perfectly natural, because it is not possible to understand something which is unknown. But I have also come to understand that for a growing number of people, the spiritual search is not only an intellectual past time, it is a vital necessity, something that is put into practice and lived day by day. With “The Science of Passion”, I hope to contribute to the search of some of these people, since my greatest dream is to be a channel of Light for my fellow man.

In this book, I will write down my personal conversations with my “Higher Self” to attempt, like Mr Walsh, to give my personal contribution to spirituality. I believe, like him, that the world is in a state of calamity and needs to be changed, and that it depends on each of us to do our best to make sure these changes occur as soon as possible. It does no good to lay the responsibility on politics and expect that only it will transform the current situation. It is up to each one of us to contribute day by day, so that this world is not literally destroyed by present greed, and furthermore, that it evolves and finally becomes what it should be: a healthy environment in which people live happily and healthily.

I discovered that the Goddess is a sort of energy full of humor, purity, beauty, with great goodness, mischievously fun, with a unique generosity, and that kind of happiness that I have only seen so far in very small children. Meeting Her changed my life, and every day I am eager to connect with Her, a process that will be explained in the book, and that fills me with emotion and gratitude.

As for the title, well, it introduces what will be my primary theme in this text. We shall speak essentially of passion and its fundamental role in human life. Psychologists and philosophers have said a lot about it. Generally, they refer to this energy as if they were dealing with a dangerous and absorbent illusion. I believe that here the Goddess will shed new light on this very important theme in our lives. She will explain, amongst other things, passion as being a real and necessary energy, in fact the most important of all energies, which we have to learn to direct and make use in our lives.

About the Author
At the age of 27 I experienced a strong existential crisis that made me question the very essence of my being. After walking 800 km and completing a sacred pilgrimage in the heart of Spain, in 1999, my life changed drastically.  I had an ulcer on my cornea which almost made me lose my eyesight, I separated from a relationship of 10 years, I had a mystical experience and wrote "The Science of Passion". This book helped me to understand and overcome many of the hardships and difficulties that accompanied this emotional death and finally it helped my rebirth into a new life in which magic was not just a romantic idea, but the subtle organic fabric life is made of. I never lost the connection to my inner Goddess, which was awakened in those days of my tempestuous quest and then flourished as the greatest blessing of my life through the writing of this book. My wishes and desires were answered and met in ways unimaginable to me before. Paulo Coelho, a renowned writer and a modern prophet, my mentor and a beloved friend, used parts of this book in his novel "Eleven Minutes" which was read worldwide and has been opening many doors for "The Science of Passion" to slowly find its ways into many hearts all over the world. I met the "enchanted prince" I called for in the book and dreamt about for such a long time. He made me discover shades of emotions that I did not even imagine I had in myself, from extreme tenderness to bursting anger, from the heights of lust and mysticism to the valleys of despair and sadness. Thanks to his exquisite guidance, I saw it all and still feel there is so much more to see. He is an artist and a poet, an actor and a singer, my dearest master and a wise madman. Life has become so much more colorful and delightful under his touch. We have been traveling the world together for ten years, we got married three times, and I found out that it is really possible to have a passionate and exciting relationship. Being in love does not have to fade and stop over the years, it is a fire that can be kept alive and has the power to create entire universes, a spiritual mission that may grow infinitely, an unfolding adventure full of uncountable surprises and lessons, if not taken for granted and well taken care of.

It's marvellous!!! Remarkable......
By Micha
About this book I can say first of all: WOW!!!

It has been a while since I have come across a book that has made me stay up all night reading, which is exactly what this book did to me. I think one of the charms of the "Science of Passion" is the way you can relate to the connecting thread of humanity in each of us - loneliness (even with a fellow;-), desire to love and be loved, to find the grat love, TRULY live, be happy, understand, etc. - and especially to keep the passion! And I felt that I came across this book at just the right moment in my life (I read it the first time about 3 years ago and it's still a part of my life).

The "Science of Passion" changed my life; it was/is a channel of light for me. It truly touched my heart, my soul; very deeply! The "Science" helped me to see some things clearer and to open my heart and listen to it. I began to observe more, paying attention to EVERYTHING, every moment, every movement, every gesture; I'm more carefully, living more passionate... I see things, I never have seen before; every day, every minute, every second. The book helped me to find my "inner light". I myself learned a lot from the "Science of Passion"; I found out so much, about me, about Love, about Life... The "Science" teached me to see and live the world with passion. Und how wonderful this is!!!

The "Science of Passion" gives deeply insights in the soul from a woman, exposes desires and longings, a story for reflection. This book can help you on your journey to find yourself. It's a book for all who are longing for love ("everything starts with a great love";-), who wants to keep the love and wants to live passionate - if you want: lessons for the reader.

Thanks to Antonella Zara for these wonderful amazing lines - floating like a river, simply pure energy! (it's surely no chance that an autor like Paulo Coelho took a lot of these lines for one of his books - by the way: I found the "Science of Passion" more remarkable than his "Eleven Minutes";-)

So thank you Antonella Zara so much for all the inspiration!!!

Review

“This text provides a modern perspective on the most pressing issues for counseling clients with diverse cultural backgrounds and ethnicities, while simultaneously including the impact of long-standing patterns of discrimination and oppression in American society.”

(Jon Reid, Southern Oklahoma State University)

“Becoming a Multiculturally Competent Counselor is a very well written and timely book on a hard subject. Old habits die hard, so a book that attempts to steer professional counseling away from the traditional, ethnocentric approach to a more global approach requires a very palatable way of fostering or facilitating the movement. I believe that this book has accomplished that.”

(Enobong Inyang, Marshall University)

“A comprehensive text that prepares the clinician for the 21st-century practice of becoming culturally competent and an advocate for the oppressed.”

(Fred Hall, Mississippi College)

It is well researched, detailed and clear in its style, with chapters organised around the standards identified by CARCREP, the US accreditation body for counselling courses. Counselling students are facilitated to develop their own multi-cultural identity through reflective exercises, developmental models and case studies...The main message that has stayed with me from this book is that ‘we the counsellors will either be part of the solution to social injustice or part of the problem’ (p348)– food for thought for all of us in the counselling profession. (Frances Lampert, Counselor and Supervisor)

The American School 1642 - 2004, by Joel Spring

This current, comprehensive history of American education is designed to stimulate critical analysis and critical thinking by offering alternative interpretations of each historical period. The point of view taken by this text emphasizes 1) the role of multiculturalism and cultural domination in shaping U.S. schools, 2) the position of the school as one of many institutions that manage the distribution of ideas in society, 3) racism as a central issue in U.S. history and U.S. educational history, and 4) economic issues as an important factor in understanding the evolution of U.S. schools.

The American School
By Susan W. Nafziger
This book was used in my masters class -- it is not your typical textbook -- in that it includes the author's opinions about educational history in America. It is well written and Spring has some opinions that can incite the reader to action and others that the reader will "just go along with". For lovers of history -- it is a good read. For those interested in the educational foundations of America, it is a good read.

Joel Springs The American School 1642-2004
By Rebecca L. Baeza
I thought the book has useful information regarding the history of education from the perspective of a scholar of Native American ancestry whose interests are in multicultural and global education, history/theory, education policy and human rights. Certain themes and main ideas did peak my interest throughout the book, but I do admit there are some gaps in the information (particularly evident through the spiraling presentation of the material) which does incite a critical analysis of the reading.

Strengths of the reading include Spring's depiction of cultural domination with his assessment of a Protestant ethic which emphasized the deculturation of people through patriotism and nationalism to achieve a balance of freedom and order. Interestingly written are Spring's analyses of ideological management where schools and media are detailed as the central distributors of knowledge/information, cultural values and ideas of a dominant Anglo-American culture. Racism is revealed as a historical/educational issue characterized by violence and claims of racial and cultural superiority by the arrival of English settlers. The text raises economic issues as a factor involving the evolution of schools with education as a means of ending poverty and social ills and increasing national wealth by extorting human capital. According to the book, consumerism is defined as an economic philosophy which assumes the key to economic growth is an endless consumption of new products which leads us to environmental education and its importance as a new radical approach to education in the 21st century.

Weaknesses are not enough supporting details regarding how educational components of the federal government's War on Poverty were key to ending or eliminating poverty. I also think Spring could have elaborated more on the impact of No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and its incredible impact on education and its future.

Conclusively, the book is a useful and effective critical analysis of the history of cultural domination in schools through ideological management, racism and economic issues. The text is written in a spiraling format which was somewhat annoying for me. As an educator, I plan to use this information to further examine contrasting perspectives to continue forming my own ideology and philosophy regarding educational issues in the world today.

The American School - Review
By S. Perez
Joel Spring's historical accounts of education in The American School portray an uncommon, historical depiction of schooling in the United States. Spring's chronicled discourse illustrates many of the injustices that conservative frameworks manifested, ranging from colonial times to the present. For example, the majority of historical artifacts express the contemporary struggles that Native Americans and minorities like African Americans, Asians and Hispanics experienced. Here, Spring includes European cultures like the Irish who underwent violence and oppression on account of their Catholic roots. Of course, the religious struggles between Protestant ideologies and those of diverse cultures are presented throughout.

Also polarized are the political reform movements between groups like the Progressive radicals and corporate minded conservatives. Interestingly, the text seems to carry an unbiased neutrality, but the authors candid, unreserved portrayal of how education mantles the academic underpinnings of the federal government, profit based corporations or overzealous unions and educational organizations, transcends a one sided implication that seemingly sides with the left. In so many words, it isn't surprising to hear about the federal and state governments uniting with private corporations, but it certainly provokes a critical overview of how such unisons re-structure, or maintain education.

Notably, the book includes a diversity of educational topics scoping the outlines of American schooling, from the culinary schemes found in an accredited cookbook that seemed to implicitly Americanize young learners cultural behaviors to the somewhat futuristic and hopeful ideas of an environmental paradigm. In essence, Spring's transcendence from one academic period to another exhibit a social, academic and in some cases even physical struggle found amidst the spheres of race, class, sex, and sub-categories of power. I find these struggles to be amongst the books greatest strengths. In other words, history isn't simply laid out there for details and data; it is a blueprint for continuing to arm a resistance against the inequalities that may detach young learners, teachers and even administrative agents for rational, democratic changes in education today.

Over the course of the book, one will undoubtedly find repetitive claims resurfacing and intertwining in between topics. Here, Spring's syntax may be found to be of slight criticism. Regardless, I find such repetitions to serve as indulging reinforcements and of solidifying character. The book serves as an exploratory trekking for anyone interested in American schooling, teachers, students and scholars.

Living with Difference: How to Build Community in a Divided World (California Series in Public Anthropology), by Adam B. Seligman, Rahel R

Whether looking at divided cities or working with populations on the margins of society, a growing number of engaged academics have reached out to communities around the world to address the practical problems of living with difference. This book explores the challenges and necessities of accommodating difference, however difficult and uncomfortable such accommodation may be. Drawing on fourteen years of theoretical insights and unique pedagogy, CEDAR—Communities Engaging with Difference and Religion—has worked internationally with community leaders, activists, and other partners to take the insights of anthropology out of the classroom and into the world. Rather than addressing conflict by emphasizing what is shared, Living with Difference argues for the centrality of difference in creating community, seeking ways not to overcome or deny differences but to live with and within them in a self-reflective space and practice. This volume also includes a manual for organizers to implement CEDAR’s strategies in their own communities.

From the Inside Flap
"The authors have the courage as well as the philosophical skills to challenge the sentimentalities designed to help us all to just 'get along.' Instead, they draw on their pedagogical experience to provide an account of how difference can be lived. This fascinating book has the potential to change the discussion about how we might live at peace without the peace achieved occluding our rightly lasting differences."—Stanley Hauerwas, Professor Emeritus of Divinity and Law at Duke University

"Both a work of scholarship of value to the academy and a practical guide for improving intergroup relations. The material is fresh and the work innovative, with new and illuminating insights. I cannot think of a comparable work.”—David Smock, Vice President of the U.S. Institute of Peace

"This book challenges readers to engage intellectual and human experiential resources to acquire empathy and celebrate differences as part of the knowledge of the self. An interdependent and interconnected reality can be realized when we interact with others in fully authentic ways."—Abdulaziz Sachedina, Professor of Islamic Studies at George Mason University
