Despite the poverty and violence so prevalent in the region, Campbell recalls the hardships of his childhood without self-pity and with plenty of humor. What he and his friends lacked in expensive toys or fancy clothes, they made up for with imagination and grit—traits that would eventually carry Campbell through high school and college—and out of poverty.

A funny, moving glimpse into Appalachia in the 1940s and 50s, A Hillbilly Grows Up tells not only the story of one young boy and his family, but describes the social fabric that held small towns together across a region riddled with deprivation and scarcity. Readers will shake their heads and wonder how Campbell survived his childhood—but will be awfully glad he did.

About the Author

Darrel Campbell studied at Berea College in Kentucky for two years before graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a BS in chemistry and attending the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania. Campbell retains US patents, published many articles in trade publications, and was profiled in an issue of Chemical Week. During his career, Campbell held positions in three multibillion-dollar international companies. He has traveled globally, even living in South America for two years. He currently lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife of over fifty years.

Cindy Campbell Krause attended Northwestern University and graduated with a degree in psychology. She went on to earn a graduate degree in marketing from Loyola University of Chicago and work in purchasing around Chicago and Milwaukee. Married for over twenty years, she has two kids and lives near Detroit, Michigan. She plans to move to the Cleveland, Ohio, area soon.

Not a good presentation of agile

PRINCE2 is an awesome Framework but this book is a miserable presentation of agile. I feel like the authors took everything agile that they could find and just dumped it into the book. The reliance on process models is very confusing. Why have the authors of this and the 2009 version not used Process Flow Diagrams. In their absence I constantly have to flip all over the book trying to understand PRINCE2 Agile. The bindings on my 2009 version book and this book are falling apart from the flipping. A flow diagram is a chronological description of a process. That is intuitive. Someone new to PRINCE2 would have a hard time using PRINCE2 based on the process model. What you have offered is just the opposite. As a reference for a current PRINCE2 practitioner or professional it might be OK. Maybe the second edition will be an improvement.

Paul was a bestselling author and independent trainer with over 27 years' experience who supported schools in raising achievement by focusing on teaching and learning. Before becoming an independent trainer, in which capacity he worked in over 3000 secondary, primary and special schools in the UK and overseas, he worked as a head of department in inner city Birmingham, an advisory teacher and a staff development tutor. PreS-Gr 1—Using imaginative illustrations and rich vocabulary, Hatanaka introduces children to exciting future careers. The book features an occupation for each letter. However, these are no ordinary jobs; they are often adventurous. Readers won't find that "B" is for baker in this book. Instead, they will find that "A is for Aviator," "N is for Naval Architect," and "X is for Xenologist." There is a "want ad" section of the book that shares a small amount of information about the various occupations. More information in the section would have been helpful, especially in explaining what a horticulturalist does, for example. The sophisticated illustrations pair nicely with the content. The colors are muted and have plenty of detail for kids and parents to pore over; the xenologist illustrations are particularly imaginative. Beautiful and unique ABC book

Beautiful retro looking pictures with the letters as part of the occupation it represents. The occupations used are not typical- for some letters this is a plus, but some could be better. One of my favorite parts of the book are the "Wanted Ads" at the end of the book. I wish they had been featured on each page to help describe each job. Many are cute and clever descriptions of the work.

There are some really cool jobs out there

From A to Z we explore the many alternative occupations that are available to us as careers! We tell our children they can be anything we want to be so it is important we teach them about these jobs, all while being introduced to the alphabet! There are some really cool jobs out there, in fact! Forest ranger! Horticulturalist! Wedding singer! Ringmaster! Oceanographer! Yogi! And so many more! So depending on where your interests lie, this book may help you find the job for you!

This is a great book to read to your child to teach them, beyond doctor, lawyer, veterinarian and all the typical jobs they learn about in school, some of the great careers that are out there that they might like to study and work towards one day! We tell children to follow their dreams but sometimes they don’t know just how many options are out there for them to pursue! I love that the back glossary is a “wanted” ad. I appreciate all the different jobs that are listed, many of which are atypical and you will have to consult the glossary at the back to help explain to these growing minds what the job entails. This is a great conversation starter between you and your child and a great book where they will have fun reading, but learn more than they expected too!
