A classic guide for evaluation techniques

Dr. Tessmer is a well-recognized expert in the field of instructional design. He has published other books on task analysis in instructional design. In fact, his book on formative evaluations is one of the favorite books used to teach formative evaluation in graduate instructional design courses. Another book to consult on this topic is Formative Evaluation for Educational Technologies by Barbara N. Flagg. A useful book on summative evaluation techniques is Program Evaluation: Alternative Approaches and Practical Guidelines by Blaine R. Worthen and others. The Tessmer and Flagg books are specifically focused on instructional technology products.
Chapter one explains the purpose behind conducting a formative evaluation and what the benefits of such an evaluation are. Chapter two gives fairly detailed information about planning a formative evaluation. The remaining four chapters each describe one of the four typical types of formative evaluation: expert review, one-to-one, small group, and field test.
This book contains a great deal of practical step-by-step information. It is obviously written by someone who has conducted many instructional design reviews and evaluations. The discussion for each of the four evaluation approaches contains a lot of sound advice on associated pitfalls as well as specific procedures. Procedures are well-defined in a step-by-step format. Example forms and questionnaires are provided where appropriate. This book is a "must have" for any instructional designer or evaluator. If you are looking for guidelines on program evaluation, especially summative evaluation, then check out the Worthen book. If you are looking for help with front-end analysis, check out Task Analysis Methods for Instructional Design, by Jonassen, Tessmer, and Hannum.
This is an excellent resource, and I hope that Dr. Tessmer will someday write an updated version of this classic.

About the Author
Chris Dixon is an activist, writer, and educator who received a PhD from the History of Consciousness program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His writing has appeared in We Are Many: Reflections on Movement Strategy from Occupation to Liberation, Anarchist Studies, Clamor, the Earth First! Journal, Left Turn, Social Movement Studies, and Upping the Anti. He has been involved in transformative social movements for more than two decades.

Captures a Crucial Turning Point in Anti-Authoritarian Politics

Skateboarding. I think skateboarding is the best analogy I can find for why I think this book is so important, why you should buy it and read it, and why you should engage the questions that it raises by talking with friends or forming a study group.

In the early days, before skateboarding was a sport, when it was just another childhood novelty, another slinky or pogo stick, there wasn't much that had to be said about it. The skateboarding "discourse" was mighty thin. Just throw together ramshackle roller-skate wheels and plywood, and find a smooth surface for some sidewalk surfing. But in the 80's--as so interestingly captured in retrospectives like Dogtown and Z-Boys--when a bunch of surf kids started putting in the extra time to explore the possibilities under their feet, and then in that transcendent moment when they realized they could go from just hugging the ground to actually rocketing into the air, everything changed. Skateboarding transformed into something different, and the vocabulary, the areas of interest and focus, the very understanding of what good or bad skateboarding was were completely reshaped. Flips and spins and gaps and railslides were thrown out there into the culture to be pondered, practiced, perfected. It turned out that the childhood novelty contained exquisite potential for demonstrating human grace and ingenuity.

I think that this book, Another Politics, documents a similar historical moment in the development of North American anti-authoritarian politics: the moment where many of us are realizing that our often dismissed movements really can defy society's gravity and launch us into freer air.

This book deftly shows how the last 25 plus years have seen the steady convergence of a variety of political threads--including the punk and peace movement pedigree of anarchist direct actions and organizing styles; the brilliant and innovative tidal wave of women of color feminism that has washed across the academy, the non-profit sector, and grassroots campaign initiatives; and the visionary call of prison abolitionists to imagine a world without jails. With time and experience, these movements have discovered their ability to evolve from being gadflies and nuisances, to winning small changes, to actually projecting and building new kinds of bottom-up people power. Right now we are in a thrilling time where we're starting to take ourselves more seriously as a legitimate political pole; we're starting to acknowledge that our wheels can leave the ground and do amazing things in the air. And, like a documentarian hanging out on the edges of graffitied swimming pools in 1980's California, Chris Dixon seems to be in just the right places at the right time to show us how the discourse is changing on the ground.

Just as skateboarding's aerial paradigm shift completely changed the way people understood the sport and talked to each other within it, the blossoming of what Dixon calls the anti-authoritarian current has led to a cascade of new questions, new vocabulary, and new ways of understanding success and failure. The greatest strength of Another Politics is how it distills numerous organizers' voices as they talk through their experiences of this shifting landscape. From the Bay Area to New Orleans, from Atlanta to Toronto, from New York City to Vancouver, we feel like witnesses to and participants in fiery living room conversations. Whether we are hearing reflections on grassroots responses to Hurricane Katrina or Superstorm Sandy, the mobilization of Sikh communities to resist deportations, or the youth organizers of Sista II Sista liberating their New York neighborhoods from violence, we get to see the somewhat raw and intimate hopes and doubts that accompany all the flashy public organizing work. We see person after person asking about care and mutual support within our movements; about questions of long-term strategy and how to better analyze who our enemy is (what Dixon condenses as the "four anti's"); about nuanced approaches to anti-authoritarian leadership; about the opportunities and traps of the "non-profit industrial complex;" about the search to build stable and nurturing "political homes;" and about sustaining our vision of a new world while staying grounded in the world as it is. In all of this, we are spared any heavy-handed prescriptive formulas and instead--especially in the final chapter--welcomed into the conversation.

Certainly, there are gaps in Dixon's coverage of these emerging dialogues. First is the book's own admission that it focuses almost exclusively on urban organizing. With some of the most promising experiments with grassroots organizing happening in the fields of Oregon, in the mining towns of Appalachia, and in rural communities all over the South, one really feels the need for a rurally-focused companion volume. Second, I think the book--presumably in the interest of highlighting the freshness of the modern anti-authoritarian current--distances itself a little too far from the legacy of capital-A Anarchism, and could have been further enriched by including more of the crucial reflections and contributions from anti-authoritarian movement corners like Z Magazine and Z-Net, Crimethinc Ex-Workers Collective, and the growing class-struggle anarchist milieu. Third, I found myself wishing that Dixon's interviews would have more thoroughly explored issues of repression and intentional movement de-stabilization, which will only get heavier as our movements gain headway. Fortunately, the book is humble and accessible enough to recognize where it falters, and opens space for others to fill in the gaps.

As far as I've tried to push the skateboarding analogy, there is one area where it completely falls apart: whereas skateboarding's airborne revelations and subsequent evolution turned it into an ever more specialized--and professionalized--pastime, the rise of anti-authoritarian politics depends on quite the opposite process. As the anti-authoritarian current finds its confidence and grows, it must open itself up to even more widespread participation, with even more of us weighing in on all the urgent and powerful questions of the day. It must belong to more than just Dixon and the 50+ people he interviewed in this book. It must belong to all of us.

The reason why I recommend this book so highly, then, is because Another Politics feels like precisely the kind of historical and theoretical primer that I think we need for more people to be able to lend their voices to the discussion.

A thrill ride of an MC romance with some interesting twists

WOW...first time for me to read anything by this author (although she says she uses two different names so who knows if I have read her under the other name)...and it was quite exciting. So much so, that I pretty much read the entire thing in one sitting because it kept my interest and I just HAD to know who Pyro was and how things would turn out with Boone and Olympia/Sally.
Mix up a mystery about a firestarter who is burning down and killing much of a small town's residents, an MC romance with a very bossy biker who is into some hardcore BDSM, some serious father/daughter and father/son drama and you have Scorched Souls in a nutshell. It was at times extremely violent (so much so that one scene almost made me stop reading for a bit), heavy into the kinky Dom/sub scene and full of a murder/mystery plot that spanned over several years.
I really thought it was quite a thrilling read and contained all the elements I like in my biker books with a few unique twists. Grab it while it is only 99 cents for the entire series.

If a book keeps me reading well past my bedtime....

I have definitely been hooked! I am so glad I found this author's work after she put together the booked set. I can only imagine myself bouncing off the walls until the next installment arrived. Which is why I avoid serials as much as possible. I am that "HEA" kind of gal. Olympia (Sally) and Boone's relationship is so muddy and convoluted from the beginning, one tends to think that nothing good is going to become of it or them, but surprise, surprise both leads react with honesty and maturity to situations brought before them. Well, almost all. Even I could see the setup with Twila and Crusher. I am surprised that Crusher's situation wasn't completely resolved, though.

I have to admit I did have a couple of "OMG! give me a break" moments, she just can't catch a break!, but not so influencing that it dropped me from the story.

This book is well worth your time and $$. Will look for this author's work with interest.

Wow! I was gifted a copy of this book for my honest review.
I had a difficult time putting this one down. It is definitely not a sweet story it leans more towards the darker aspect. I love biker romance and even a bit more when it includes the gritty side. This had all of those elements and more. Great Read!

Something for everyone in cutting through the noise of the JavaScript landscape

I don't think its going out on much of a limb to say that the JavaScript landscape is difficult to navigate and the pace can be a challenge to keep up with. It seems like we're being introduced to a new framework, library or toolkit every day with the only thing we're getting more of are opinions on how we should use them. It can definitely lead to a bit of analysis paralysis, especially for new developers struggling to figure out how and where to start. JavaScript Frameworks for Modern Web Dev cuts through the noise and will get you up and going with a solid foundation, not only for developing the application, but optimizing for scalability, maintainability and long-term viability as well.

There's something for everyone in this book. Even those familiar with the tools being covered in each chapter will find the content a nice refresher and likely pick up a few tips or discover new features they weren't taking advantage of previously. The chapters progress nicely from basics to more advanced features, so you're not just seeing an overview but learning how to make the most of each tool and avoid common complications that may come with them. New developers might find it best to skip around instead of reading straight through for this reason, but with all of the information packed in here, it will absolutely be worth revisiting down the road.

I am a blogger, writing reviews about IT books, IT articles and anything I find interesting. I have received the book JavaScript Frameworks for Modern Web Dev from the publisher Apress.Com for a review, upon a request of my site.

The reason to ask for the book was that I am currently getting into VBA (for a fourth year in a row actually) and I consider myself really a master of this scripting language and thus I wanted to see what is going around in the other languages, which are not "locked" inside the MS Applications. Well, thus I started to slowly "regenerate" my JS knowledge, which was mainly obtained from some IT courses in Bulgaria. You may check my site, to obtain more ideas about it.
The reason for the previous paragraph is to show, that I am really not a JS expert, but I am quite familiar with it. Something like advanced beginner. Or I consider myself so.

Let's get back to the book. It consists of 16 chapters and thus presents 16 different JS Frameworks. I already had some experience with Angular, Bower, Grunt, RequireJS, Lodash & Underscore, thus these were the chapters that I read with great interest. And I was quite satisfied.

First things first - the whole code is 100% available for free online at the site of Apress, which is really the way to write books for JS Frameworks. The second thing - the book is readable, explaining the main idea of each framework, how to install it and how does it work. It does not explain the basics of JavaScript, thus if you are a beginner, this is not your book, definitely! I liked the style of the book, where you get a summary at the end of each chapter and an introduction at the beginning, stating what is going to be learnt.

What I did not like? Somehow I found it difficult at some times to install the frameworks and to make them run... Probably a more step-by-step approach would have been better for me (but I am not a pro in JS, thus someone else may not need to be hold by the hand all the time).

Read this if you're feeling lost at sea in the proliferation of JS frameworks!

There has been a proliferation of JavaScript frameworks in recent years, all meant to be the next big thing that solves all of our problems as developers. This book does an excellent job at singling out the frameworks that offer the biggest productivity gains for developers and enhanced experiences for users.

Since I'm primarily a front-end developer, the first half of the book appealed the most to me. The chapters on RequireJS and Browserify helped me finally grasp the difference between the two different methodologies, while the Knockout and Angular chapters served as excellent refreshers.

The rest of the book is mostly dedicated to Node.js frameworks, although several chapters are applicable for use on the client-side as well (like Underscore and Lodash). The book really could be split into two - client-side frameworks and server-side (Node.js) frameworks - but with the rise in popularity/use in Node.js and the always in demand client-side technologies, you're guaranteed to come away with new knowledge after reading.

This is definitely a recommended read to developers who feel left behind in the proliferation of new frameworks, but be aware that most of the content requires at least a medium level of JavaScript understanding to fully grasp the concepts being brought forth.

The original story was written about twenty years ago. My aunt was being given a stuffed toy rabbit as a gift. My mom wanted a story to go with it. "The Fourth Night before Christmas" and the "Modern Myth" series grew from there.

About the Author
Jason began writing in college some twenty years ago. A strong interest in fantasy and adventure led him to explore the children's genre. Children's stories are by far the most "fun" for him to write. Jason and his loving, extremely patient, wife have three children and two grandchildren. Other members of the family include a demanding feline and an eighty pound yellow lab that thinks he is a lap puppy. They live in a small town in Southern Indiana where Jason owns a business and serves as director of the local community foundation.

A must read book for parents to share with their children!

Twas' The Fourth Night of Christmas is a holiday book to read.

This story uses animals a fierce dragon and a gentle hare to show how good wins over evil.

It's easy to read and one that parents will love sharing with their children.

I enjoyed the author using the Winter Solstice and Christmas together. The solstice touches on the evil of the darkness during that time of year in which the longest day occurred. The season of Christmas brings light and safety to people as the days become longer.

I thought using a hare was great. He knew what had to be done and went about doing it no matter the cost. The moral of good overcoming evil is shown extremely well in this story.

My five-year-old great nephew as well as older children I shared this story with loved it.

Jason Jones is a unique writer and I am looking forward to more of his stories.

This book was so interesting, my children wouldn't put it down. My entire family really enjoyed it! It just may become a holiday tradition. My 9 year old son read it again, sneaking to read by his night light. He simply couldn't get it read quick enuff. It was a real page turner!

I burned through this LONG bundle in less than a day. Just couldn't stop reading! Each story was self-contained but very good. They were tied together thematically with the idea of dominating women which I enjoyed a lot. I think my favorite was “Stephanie's Ride” or the “Love Potion.” But I enjoyed my time with each story. I'll be picking up more for sure!

I had read all of these before except for the “Billionaire's Love Potion.” At the price I picked it up for, it was definitely worth it. Super hot story!

If you haven't read these and you're a fan of Nadia Nightside or erotica or mind control stories, then I think this would definitely be your deal. Overall it gets an A-plus from me!

Lots of fun!

I read Nadia Nightside stories when I want to take a break from the world and have a good experience with some super fantasy times. This bundle is a great example of that and I would recommend it for that reason! Check it out! Especially “Stephanie's Public Ride.” That one was killer.

Helpful Hawthorne criticism

I bought this book to aid in the writing of a paper on Hawthorne. I have always liked literature criticism books by a single author because you can return to them as a source for other information and be able to count on the style and the type of content the author will give. The Hawthorne section in this book gives an examination of the allegorical quality of "The Scarlet Letter" as well as a good focus on the main characters and their own existence as singular representations: "Chillingworth, the probing intellect; Dimmesdale, the moral sensibility; Pearl, the unconscious or demonic poetic faculty. Hester is the fallible human reality . . .". It also points to aspects of the book such as the two intense scaffold scenes. I found Richard Chase's book to be very helpful. His criticism is not too far 'out there' like some often are. I came across other articles by him in my research and he always seems to be able to probe deeply into the hidden meanings and sort out the individualities of the characters without losing the reader. I would recommend this book because of a general familiarity with Richard Chase's work and also because I found the Hawthorne section to be extremely helpful in my own research.
