Should be required reading for all teachers

I read this book only a few years after it was published while I was in college. I almost couldn't believe how logical and straight forward this basic idea was, and how few of its practices our national school system follows. Dr. William Glasser wrote a classic that will never be read or truly understood by most educators in our dumbed down, American education system. When I read the book, I cheered loudly, then realized that it was almost a lost cause. My wife attended several gradeless colleges that used this method of education, but when she tried to get a job, every major employer would not accept the type of student reports those schools had issued to her. Each job she applied for required only "grades" with numbers or letters from the familiar 4.o system. She was required to get her reports analyzed by a "legitimate" school system and translated into grades or numbers and only one university in the entire state offered to do so. My wife is a brilliant woman whose education shows through very clearly. Her non-traditional colleges were obviously educating students rather than attempting to place everything into a convenient category or number system. None of those wonderful gradeless colleges are operating anymore. I strongly wish that this book would become required reading for all educators in this country.

THE INVENTOR OF "REALITY THERAPY" LOOKS AT SCHOOLS (FOR THE FIRST TIME)

William Glasser (born 1925) is an American psychiatrist, who is the developer of reality therapy [Reality Therapy: A New Approach to Psychiatry] and choice theory [Choice Theory: A New Psychology of Personal Freedom].

He wrote in the Introduction to this 1969 book, "I believe that most people who write about these [failing] schools have not raised the critical issue... they have not looked deeply enough into the role education itself has played in causing schools to fail... It is the faults and shortcomings of the system itself that I wish to examine, and make suggestions to correct... The main obstacle is our present educational philosophy, a philosophy of noninvolvement, nonrelevance, and limited emphasis on thinking. Education must move toward ... involvement, relevance, and thinking---or we will not solve the overwhelming problems of children who fail in school." (Pg. xiii-xiv)

He states, "As a psychiatrist... I have discovered an important fact: regardless of how many failures a person has had in his past... he will not succeed in general until he can in some way first experience success in one important part of his life. Given the first success to build upon, the negative factors, the ones emphasized by the sociologists, mean little." (Pg. 5) He adds, "this is the keystone of Reality Therapy, when a child makes a value judgment and a commitment to change his behavior, no excuse is acceptable for not following through. This is discipline." (Pg. 23)

He observes, "Many teachers are starting to use some of the techniques involved, especially the circle and the open-ended question, in regular teaching... however, most teachers ... have not incorporated classroom meetings into an integral part of their class program. Unfortunately, it is usually isolated from regular teaching... [but] the success of the meetings is slowly winning them over. Students have responded very favorably in every class... they become involved quickly in the meetings." (Pg. 142)

He suggests, "Another way for the school to maintain contact with the community is to invite back its graduates, both successful and failing... Graduates of one to ten years are of the same generation as the students, so communication is intact, yet they have had experience that the students have not. Graduates should be invited back to discuss not only their successes, but their failures." (Pg. 223-224)

This book was written during the "educational experiments" of the 1960s, yet Glasser's ideas are not without relevance to today's scene.

In revenge he arranges her betrothal to a young nobleman but Christina steadfastly refuses to consummate the marriage and defies her parents' cruel coercion. Sustained by visions, she finds refuge with the hermit Roger, and lives concealed at Markyate for four years, enduring terrible physical and emotional torment. Although Christina is supported by the abbot of St Albans, she never achieves the recognition that he intended for her.

Written with striking candour by Christina's anonymous biographer, the vividness and compelling detail of this account make it a social document as much as a religious one. Christina's trials of the flesh and spirit exist against a backdrop of scheming and corruption and all-too-human greed.

About the Author

Fanous and Leyser's collection of essays about Christina, published in 2005, has increased interest in the scholarly community. The St Albans Psalter, which was presented to Christina and the priory she founded, is one of the glories of twelfth-century English manuscript illumination and has now been digitized and is available on the Web.

I had to buy and read this for a medieval ...

I had to buy and read this for a medieval literature class. This is a hagiography written about Christina of Markyate so the details written within are exaggerated because the person who originally wrote about her was trying to make a case for her to become canonized. It is an interesting story if you are interested in the lives of saints or those that have committed saintly deeds.
