Helped Me Understand the Human Mind, No Psychology Degree Required!

Psychology is a fascinating topic, but some books on the subject are either too dry or filled with facts you'll read but never use. Not this one!

"Applied Psychology" gives a practical view of the human mind, and author Jonny Bell explains complex concepts like Neuro-linguistic programming in a simple, straightforward way.

I was particularly interested in the "Think Like a Champion" chapter, which outlines how to apply sports psychology principles to one's career and everyday life. The "Culture and Societies" section was also a must-read for anyone who has ever traveled abroad or is considering doing so.

The "Practical Advice" segment was inspirational and chock-full of awesome pointers that we can all use to improve our lives -- by applying basic psychological principles.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the workings of the human mind. "Applied Psychology" is a good crash course in that subject. I'd also recommend the book to anyone who wants to change his / her behavior, as there are several helpful behavioral modification techniques.

Applied Psychology Is An Interesting Read

I have always liked psychology, astronomy and math tricks. I know, it's weird but there you go. When I saw this book by Jonny Bell, I was at first a bit skeptical. There are tons of books on psychology. However, this one turned out to be a real winner. Written in a clear and concise style, it takes you through the everyday psychology of life with a look at sports psychology and nuero-lingquistic programming. While this isn't the most comprehensive book on psychology I've seen, it is a good overview and touches on parts that are extremely interesting.

About the Author
Lior Gideon, PhD, is a Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. He specializes in corrections-based program evaluation and focuses his research on rehabilitation, reentry, and reintegration issues and in particular by examining offenders’ perceptions of their needs. His research interests also involve international and comparative corrections-related public opinion surveys and their affect on policy. To that extent, Dr. Gideon has published several manuscripts on these topics, including two previously published books on offenders needs in the reintegration process: Substance Abusing Inmates: Experiences of Recovering Drug Addicts on Their Way Back Home (2010, Springer), and Rethinking Corrections: Rehabilitation, Reentry, and Reintegration (with Hung-En Sung, 2011, SAGE). His other works were recently published in The Prison Journal, the International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology, and the Asian Journal of Criminology. Dr. Gideon earned his PhD from the Faculty of Law, Institute of Criminology at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Maryland’s Bureau of Governmental Research.

Hung-En Sung was appointed associate professor at John Jay in 2006. He received his Ph.D. in 2000 and M.A. in 1993 from the U. at Albany, SUNY. In 2007 he was awarded both the Recognition for Outstanding Scholarly Achievements – The City University of NY and Faculty Scholarly Excellence Award from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He has served as a research associate for five years in the Division of Policy Research and Analysis at the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. In the area of substance abuse policy, Professor Sung has researched on the therapeutic process and the outcomes of mandated drug abuse treatment, on the diversion and treatment of chronic offenders with co-occurring disorders, and the role of faith-based treatment in American society. His comparative research has revolved around the impact of democratization on political corruption and the administration of criminal justice. He has published extensively on these issues in many top journals. He authored The Fragmentation of Policing in American Cities (2002, Praeger) and is the co-editor of Crime and Punishment Around the World: Vol. 2 The Americas (Praeger).

Rethinking Corrections stirs discussion

Up-to-date data and researched perspectives, well organized, well documented, but does not pontificate, blame or gloss over; doesn't give answers but points toward solutions. Places corrections within the context of social justice, which not only broadens the perspectives but provides a deeper grounding for rehabilitation, re-entry and reintegration as related to public safety, individual responsible growth and interdependence, and just and cost-effective social policy. It promotes critical thinking and critical understanding of America's unique development and role in criminal justice.

It's a textbook, but even so, it was pretty helpful

I read every column of paranoid penguin and they are quite good. This book is ok, but not great. They (I mean they because several chapters are not by Mike) try to cover a huge amount of information and make the mistake of being both too broad in some areas and too specific in others. Overall, there wasn't a cohesive glue to bring the chapters together into a single vision.

For instance, for a book that introduces FTP servers, web servers, mail (imap/smtp), dns - they are like separate entities. They do not complete the picture by showing a complete network diagram with IDS / VPN, -- showing an example of all of their advice coming together in a working solution. And Kerberos isn't even mentioned.

They were extremely specific in some areas like talking about rpm example/debian/ make options and specific .conf options ad nauseum - which detracted from the whole picture. Is someone securing bind 4 really reading this book? Also, maybe a mention of apt-get - - but don't tell me how to install each package on every architecture - it just inflates the word count.

I don't think this book was focused enough in the 'big picture' of trying to piece together all of the tiny pieces into a coherant whole, while at the same time it gets cought up in the minute details of certain packages making for a tough read.

Perhaps they could have included an actual example company or two showing possible layouts of ldap in action with:

login/mail/split-dns/firewalls/database$web.

This book goes along with the moving trend of the normal computer user, securing your data. Servers generally are targeted more often than the average home PC because most are made to be accessible from the outside world. This is where securing that server comes into play. This book covers the tools and techniques to securing your Bastion host.

First I'd like to start out and explain what Bastion host means as according this book so you can understand what this book covers more specifically. Bastion Host is defined as "A system that runs publicly accessible services but is usually not itself a firewall. Bastion hosts are what we put on DMZ (although they can be put anywhere). The term implies that a certain amount of system hardening has been done, but sadly, this is not always the case."

After you understand what a Bastion host is defined as, you should understand that this book mainly covers these server daemons and the systems that run them. But some of the information applies to a Linux desktop system such as a per host iptables firewall, using secure shell, keeping up with your logs, and intrusion detection. Most of these things the average user doesn't care much about but sometimes being paranoid comes in handy.

Someone who would most likely use this book more than the average desktop user would probaly be a system administrator. Securing web, database, ftp, dns, and email servers is what majority of this book contains. Along with covering these server systems, there are guides to securing the Linux system that runs these daemons along with designing the networks around these types of hosts.

One of the sections I'm most fond of is Chapter 2: Designing Perimeter Networks. With this section you can really take a look at the design and layout of the different types of networks and figure out the portions that suit your needs for your own network. The diagrams shown in this chapter help explain what is going on with the traffic and allows you to see exactly what is going on and at what points the systems are protected.

At the end of the book there are 2 well commented iptables firewall scripted that allow you to get a feel for the netfilter iptables system if you're not familiar with it already. With some modification of these scripts you can easily bring them into a working environment depending on your situation, which sometimes these helps with some of the frustration with the iptables syntax. I personally prefer the PF system within OpenBSD for it's clean syntax and have grown away from iptables, but both are powerful firewall systems and should fit the needs of your network.

I'd definitely recommend this book to system admins or anyone who is paranoid about their security. Security is always something that people should be educated about.

It did not disappoint. I became so engrossed that I stayed awake ...

From the moment Maggie replied to an email I sent her, wondering when I could expect a new story, with the news that this book was to be released I have been waiting in tenterhooks for it to arrive. It did not disappoint. I became so engrossed that I stayed awake for several hours past when I usually go to sleep just so that I could finish it in one sitting. I honestly cannot find the words to express what an amazing storyteller Maggie Ryan is. She is absolutely amongst my favorite authors, and when it comes to Victorian ageplay, no one does it better. Her characters seem to come alive, and when I read her stories, the details are so vivid I feel as though I am a part of it. She writes the women in her stories as strong, confident, and sassy, the type of woman from whom submission must be earned, but oh what a prize it is once it has been won. Lexie, the heroine of this book was no exception. After tragedy she is left to fend for herself until Max steps in to become both her husband and her Papa. But first she must be trained, and where better than Ms. Summer's school? There she will learn what it means to submit, and how to become the little girl she has kept locked inside. Side by side with other women like herself she must come to grips with who she is and what she needs. And it is a truly beautiful journey. I cannot stress enough that this is a book worth owning, and if you haven't read Ms. Ryan's other books, I would recommend you go but them all (maybe not at once or if you are anything like me, you won't get anything done for days).

VICTIORIAN AGE PLAY FINISHING SCHOOL FOR LITTLES

OMG, Maggie Ryan does not disappoint with her new series, Lessons in Submission. A new spin off from the Women of Wintercrest and Hunter's Ridge series. Lord Maximilian Hollister has been in search of Alexandria Bannister after promising her late father he would care for and marry her. Alexandria had known of Lord Hollister from her father's letters and had fallen in love with him already. Max marries her immediately by special license and then places her with Miss Eleanor Summers where she will be trained under the tutelage of a nanny and teachers in the art of age-play to become her Papa's sweet little Lexie. This is a beautiful Victorian age-play with delightfully charming characters, witty dialogue, erotic training and discipline in spankings, oral and anal play. I can't wait to see the next in this series as we met several Littles and their Papas.

There she is taught to be submissive to her husband and to enjoy being a little girl

This is set in the world of the Women of Wintercrest. Alexandria is in the equivalent of a orphanage. This morning she will find out what is going to happen to her. Max has finally found Alexandria. Her father saved his life in the war and he had a debt of honor to pay. Luckily, once he found her, she was the type of woman he needed. One who could be his little girl. So, he marries her and then enrolls her in Miss Summers’ school for young women. There she is taught to be submissive to her husband and to enjoy being a little girl. I loved the previous series and there is mention of the women we met there. I can’t wait for the next installment in this series. I give this 5 stars.
