About the Author
Dr. Noel Kalicharan is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad. For more than 30 years, he has taught programming courses to people at all levels. He has been teaching programming, among other things, at the University since 1976. In 1988, he developed and hosted a 26-programme television series entitled Computers - Bit by Bit. Among other things, this series taught programming to the general public. He is always looking for innovative ways to teach logical thinking skills which go hand in hand with programming skills. His efforts resulted in two games - BrainStorm! and Not Just Luck - which won him the Prime Minister's Award for Invention and Innovation in 2000 and 2002. He is a Computer Science author for Cambridge University Press which published his international successes, Introduction to Computer Studies and C By Example. The C book is ranked among the best in the world for learning the C programming language. It has received glowing reviews from readers as far away as Australia, Canada, India and Scotland. This book is written in a more leisurely style. Born in Lengua Village, Princes Town, Trinidad, he received his primary education at the Lengua Presbyterian School and his secondary education at Naparima College. He is a graduate of The University of the West Indies, Jamaica, the University of British Columbia, Canada and The University of the West Indies, Trinidad.

Good Topics but weak contents

Good topics but too few examples. Better find some other books if you want to understand more of his topics. for example, void pointers, he didn't give sufficient examples to explain his important concept.

Outstanding Reference Source

I checked this book out of our local library and was so impressed with the information provided I had to purchase. Found an excellent used copy through Amazon. If you are interested in what you are taking into your body- then you will find this Encyclopedia a very valuable tool. The author offers descriptions that include traditonal medicinal and nutritive benefits of whole foods and in addition- their relation to the Ayurvedic system of health. I found the author's personal asides and recipe suggestions a charming bonus- this New Whole Foods Encyclopedia by no means reads like a dry reference tome but more along the lines of a compendium of excellent information compiled by an old friend.

I was hoping for more information along the lines of specific nutritional content and colored photographs. A little too brief for me. It's a good general resource, but I think I prefer World's Healthiest Foods by George Mateljan.

great coverage of food by type

i like this book because it was everything i was looking for. it lists each type of produce, herb, oils and more in alphabetical order. the book is easy to navigate and Rebecca Wood is clear and concise in her descriptions. i would suggest making sure you read the intro pages first, otherwise you will confused when she describes foods in certain ways. i would definitely recommend this to others.

About the Author

Josh R. Gerow earned his BS in psychology at the University of Buffalo and his PhD in experimental psychology at the University of Tennessee. A college professor for more than 40 years, he conducts research and continues to teach courses at Indiana University—Purdue University at Fort Wayne. He is also the author (or coauthor) of sixteen editions of introductory psychology textbooks.

Kenneth S. Bordens earned his BA in psychology from Farleigh Dickinson University and his MA and PhD in social psychology from the University of Toledo. He has taught at Indiana University—Purdue University at Fort Wayne for the past 30 years. The author of a number of psychology textbooks, he is currently writing a text on statistics.

Evelyn Blanch-Payne earned her PhD in educational psychology from Kent State University. The recipient of numerous teaching awards, she was also recently listed among the Great Women of the 21st Century. She teaches psychology at Clark Atlanta University.

Human Gene Mutation brings together for the first time a short history of mutation research, a comprehensive analysis of the nature of human gene mutation (single base-pair substitutions, deletions, splice site, promoter mutations, etc.), and an assessment of the consequences of mutation both at the level of gene expression and for the complex relationship between genotype and clinical phenotype. Laboratory methods for mutation detection and analysis and current possibilites in molecular diagnostic medicine are also reviewed.

The central theme of this volume is the non-randomness of human gene mutation and its implications for both the nature and prevalence of genetic disease. The cognition that certain DNA sequences are hypermutable provides vital new clues as to the basic (and endogenous) mechanisms of mutagenesis. Novel explanatory and predictive models of mutagenesis are proposed. Together this constitutes a unique approach to understanding the ultimate causes of human genome pathology. Edward Ghali is a Professor in the Department of Mining, Metallurgy, and Materials Engineering at Université Laval. “Ripple: The Utimate Beginner’s Guide for Understanding Ripple Currency” is just that: an outstanding primer on digital currencies in general and Ripple’s XRP currency in specific. Elliott Branson gives you all of the information you need to get started with Ripple, from starting and funding your Ripple account to using the currency.

The book is written and organized in a logical fashion, beginning with an introduction to the currency and working its way through how you can obtain Ripple XRPs and use them. While there is certainly more to the subject, Branson provides you with what you need to know to get up and running with Ripple. I strongly recommend this book for getting your feet wet and getting into the action of getting and using the Ripple online currency.

An Excellent Introduction

I’ve been hearing more about online currencies over the past year or so—but had no grasp as to how they work. I didn’t even understand that there was more than one type of digital currency available online. This book is not only an excellent description of Ripple, but how you can use Ripple to complete transactions. The thought of being able to trade and pay for services and products while cutting out the middle man is ingenious. With the current state of the economy—online currency is definitely something I will be adding to my radar.

"Ruby 3, Part One: The Invisible World" is an eclectic mix of pulp adventures, spirituality, anti-consumerism, puns, politics and pretty much everything else that can possibly be crammed in. A full-cast audio production, this is the third adventure in the ZBS Foundation's award-winning series Ruby: The Adventures of a Galactic Gumshoe.

"Ruby 3" brings back all of the favorite characters from the previous adventures. Many people were disappointed with the mish-mash of storylines and the new actress that was Ruby 2, so series-author Meatball Fulton made sure to hit a homerun with this follow-up. The rat-faced and scheming Rodant Kapoor, the lonely techie And/Or, the android obsessed archeologist TJ Teru (played by Bill Raymond, better known as "The Greek" on The Wire), the speak-song singing Android Sisters, and of course the Galactic Gumshoe (a good one) herself, Ruby, all return for this exciting adventure.

The story begins when the group-mind Auroreans hire Ruby to investigate an evil force disrupting their pure aesthetics. They believe the force emanates from Magnifico, the City of Malls, where it clouds people's minds into buying things they don't need. During her search, Ruby meets Inanna, who wears the symbol of the Seven Gates of the Society of Malls. Inanna is destined to play an important roll in the story, as she is forced to confront each of the seven gates, while being attacked by a mysterious woman named Erishkigal, Queen of Darkness, and her shape-shifting minion Inky.

Ruby's search leads her far and wide, including the inflatable retreat of Father Mojo and his disciples. Father Mojo is able to put a name to the evil force, Zumzammin, the two-faced God, and puts Ruby, who has the ability to slow time but not stop it, on the path of searching for the Time Suspenders, who can stop time by pure will. Meanwhile, Ruby and Rodant Kapoor find themselves mixed up a turf war between the Scuzzies and the Concerto Grosso, both vying for control of Magnifico.

That is just some of what is packed inside this amazing adventure. Aside from the over-arching story, there are several vignettes, like the introduction of Rodant Kapoors wife and son, or TJ Teru's quest for the ultimate game of enlightenment left behind by the ancient Nulians. I really enjoyed how "Ruby 3" ties in with the ZBS Foundation's other popular series, Jack Flanders, with the inclusion of Dave Adam's character of Mojo Sam.

There are some great new characters as well, especially the Inky whose mischievous little giggle belies the acts he is capable of. There is a nice balance between serious/silly as well, with the Inanna/Erishkigal story being a dark struggle interspersed with the comic adventures of Rodant Kapoor and his question to be "somebody doing something."

The series is a true epic, spanning 10 CDs in total with almost an hour on each CD. Unlike previous "Ruby" adventures, where the story is chunked into 5-minute episodes, each episode of "Ruby 3" runs around 30 minutes. Split into two parts, each having 5 CDs in the collection, the second part of the series Ruby 3, Part 2: The Invisible World is sold separately.

Ruby reaches new heights

Ruby reached a wonderful blend of action, philosophy, satire, exoticism, slap-stick and happy Dada madness in this third series. The Android Sisters get maximum play, the secrets of the universe are revealed, and craziest of all you can listen to this with the kids and they'll get into it. Something for everybody--kind of like life.

I first heard this amazing radio Drama on PBS Radio back in the 80's and was blown away!
I've loved Radio Dramas my whole life (The Shadow, Dragnet, etc.) and this Sci Fi Storytelling
with it's ensemble cast, dialogue & awesome humor makes it my introduction to Meatball Fulton
& ZBS Studios!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this selection!

Finey's probing mind has also discovered a Saros Cycle for this vital Venus-Mars interplay, offering further insights into the broader implications of these planets. Altogether, this author has done a great job of researching and skillfully presenting such timeless material. - Bil Tierney, author of six astrology books, including Dynamics of Aspect Analysis.

About the Author
A member of the Federation of Australian Astrologers since the early 1980s and serving on the committee as Victorian Treasurer for seven years, Michele is also a member of the Association of Professional Astrologers. Michele works as an astrologer and stress management therapist in Melbourne where she uses astrology, hypnotherapy and other tools to facilitate healing. She also conducts meditation classes. Her main astrological passions are mundane astrology, psychological astrology and healing. Her first book, Secrets of the Zodiac was published March 2009.

An enduring contribution

Michele Finey has has stepped up to the plate and delivered a solid and enduring contribution to the field of Astrology. In the tradition of such astrological greats as Alexander Ruperti and Robert Blaschke, she examines the cyclical interaction of Venus and Mars on both a personal and collective level. This is a very fine book which any serious student of cycles should have on their shelf.

Very few astrologers understand cycles well enough to delineate the planetary phases in a book, but here Finey courageously offers her own interesting and informative take on the various relationships between Venus and Mars with the Sun. Personally I love her use of the universal Hero's Journey for Mars, having written an essay and a software package using the same metaphor for the planetary phases myself. It's a solid metaphor that works quite well, which she illustrates with examples from historical figures. Her Venus phases are unique, and reminiscent of Demetra George's Goddess work, with various Goddesses embodying each of the phases. Again these are clearly elucidated and illustrated with examples. And finally her investigation of the various relationships of Venus and Mars is the best I have seen since Jeffrey Wolf Green did a chapter on them in his second Pluto book.

But wait, I've saved the best for last. One of the real gems in this book are the illustrations, which are first rate. The investigations into sacred geometry and alchemy/metallurgy are very interesting, scholarly and rigorous. The most fantastic contribution here is Finey's investigation into the long term cycle of Venus and Mars conjunctions, which she calls the Venus-Mars Saros cycle. Just like eclipses happen in groups or families that span thousands of years, Finey has discovered similar relationships between Venus-Mars conjunctions. This has ramifications not only in Mundane astrology, but also for personal horoscopes via the "degree of passion" or original point of commencement for the Venus-Mars cycle to which you belong. Finey deserves considerable applause for this last contribution alone. Well done!

It is a pleasure to write a review of this book, which is fine enough to rate as one of the most important astrological studies of recent years. That may sound an extravagant claim, but not enough astrologers engage with the great planetary cycles or investigate the larger ideas which inform the practice of astrology, much less seek to make them comprehensible to as wide an audience as possible.

In this thoroughly researched, well drafted and well presented text, Michele Finey has managed the balancing act required to write about often complex topics whilst keeping the information easy to understand and engaging. In the process she has produced both a book which all serious astrologers should be adding to their libraries, and a book which is accessible to people with little knowledge of astrological concepts and jargon who nevertheless want to understand better what Venus and Mars mean.

Venus and Mars are familiar, fundamental symbols to all astrologers, and both are vital factors to consider when assessing the astrology of human relationships, especially those relationships with any kind of erotic dimension. Some astrologers will be aware of the Venus-Earth cycle, which has been studied more than once, but the special point to this book is the way Michele has examined the long dance, over many centuries, between Venus and Mars, and how she has looked at this both as an influence on the individual horoscope and on much larger movements of consciousness and relationship on a collective level. Nobody has done this before - which is why this book is so important and so valuable. Groundbreaking texts like this are rare, and are to be treasured as a result.

But this book is much more than a high-minded text examining the long cycles of Venus and Mars. This is a wide ranging discussion of what Venus and Mars mean, fundamentally, as symbols, and how they work their magic. Michele includes a careful examination of them as morning and evening `stars', and helpful chapters discussing the `phases' they are in at the times people are born. You don't have to puzzle out what phase you were born under: There is a useful guide in the book's appendix. People are sure to find these chapters very illuminating, giving new insight into how the planet of love and pleasure - Venus - and the planet of action and assertion - Mars - work their influences on our hearts and minds and lives. Many chart examples of famous people are offered to illustrate and explain these factors.

There is something here for everyone, and richly nourishing food for thought for all serious astrologers who want to deepen their understanding of the dynamics of desire and action, enhancing their astrological craft and practice in the process. Michele presented some of the material offered here at the Federation of Australian Astrologers' international conference in Brisbane in 2010. I was in the audience at her talk, and was immediately excited by the work she was doing, its quality and significance. This book, the fruits of all her labors, has exceeded my hopes for it and I cannot recommend it too highly. `The Sacred Dance of Venus and Mars' is, quite simply, a must-have!
